Silly Vulcan, you don't see the true value of the Death Star Pro Max! Say you are approaching a planet and are just a little out of optimum range? Our telephoto laser takes care of that! Or you've jumped in system but a little to close , the wide angle laser will boil off that pesky atmosphere before you can snap your fingers or whatever you have, giving you time to re-adjust and blow the planet to hell with the standard focus laser.

I alwaya figure that a Death Star uses more than a high-powered laser. If you want to not only render a planet lifeless & unlivable but destroy it, you want to make sure destruction is instantaneous & the planet won’t re-coalesce under gravity. Therefore, I figure DS uses Dark Energy—sonething theorized by real science & capable of overcoming gravity. (Continues)

(Continued) Directing it at a massive body would cause the world to fly apart, and so radially that by the time gravity reasserted itself, it wouldn’t be able to reassemble. This could also be an incredible energy source for the DS—perhaps held in check by a magnetic field. If the field failed, then the DS itself would fly apart from its own DE. I know DE wasn’t theorized in 1977, but Lucas/Disney could use it now to explain it.
