Can't have been that hard to find, only took one day looking with a local, probably one of those " we discovered..." when the locals have always known they were there.
We used to have a skink family behind our house that the University spent thousands looking for.
Our parents forbid us to say anything because they were certain we would be forbidden to spray weeds.
Hope this doesn't make them popular as pets.

It's a type of leafcutter bee, of the resin bee type. Those guys always have huge chompers.

Here's one that I caught in Tennessee, a very closely related species in the same genus. Megachile sculpturalis, the giant resin bee. The chompers aren't anywhere near as big and these dudes are only about 2/3 the size of the bees in this post, but it does still have monster chompers.
