If the train is cheaper and you're not in a hurry, then the choice would be obvious for me. I like traveling by train, and I hate flying. What's the difference in time, for you?
They have to travel a lot farther to get from one end to the other than most other countries. It's about the distance. It's going to be cheaper to get a train ride from one side of PA to the other than a flight. But it's going to take more to get from PA to CA.
The answer depends on whether it's the journey or destination. The Northeast Regional from Boston to Washington is very different that the California Zephyr from Chicago to San Fran. Whatever you do make sure you get the Signature Flat Iron Steak.
My wife and I did this to go from Melbourne to Brisbane, sprang for a private train room. It was nice, chill - still took a day and a half, but even a short flight eats up most of your day with BS. I recommend it anyway.
yeah, this is my main thing with flying - have to get to the airport 2 hours early, which for me requires leaving for the airport 3.5 hrs before flight time; wait and pay to park, wait to check in, wait to check bags, wait at the gate, wait when the flight is delayed, wait to pick up bags, and then pay more to get from the ass end of town where the airport is to wherever im actually going. i take trains whenever i can, and it's not usually much slower.
My daughter and I took empire builder and pacific coastliner last summer for a big bike trip and I highly recommend it. The food was good too and the sleeping car is a pretty great way to travel.
We visit grandson and family in Santa Cruz from Seattle regularly. Don't fly. Sleeper train takes 24 hours and costs 5 to 10 times the cost of flying (if you want a sleeper) depending of cabin you get.
I have taken a couple of trips in a sleeping car on Amtrak from Philly to San Antonio, Texas and one to Louisiana from Philly. I would highly recommend it if you have the money, since they are a little pricey compared to flying but worth every dime. You can really see parts of the U.S. you won't see flying or even driving for that matter. Plus you meet a lot of diverse people and have time to yourself to relax and not feel rushed like every other day. I could go on forever but just my 2 cents
The wife and I are strongly considering taking the Spirit of New Orleans down to visit family, but to your point it would cost more than flying (to get the sleeper car at least) and it's like a 17 hour train ride. Idk if I can handle that long on a train x.x
I think it is a nice trip and you can hang out in the one train that has glass all over to look around. Or just sit in the room and look out the window. Meal’s are included with sleeper cars and you can get off when the train stops every now and then. I’d say try it once for the experience and fly back. Let me know what you do or questions just message me. 😁

Passengers on busses and trains speak with one another, but on an airliner, people act like they are on the flight only to take a nap.

We are debating this for a trip to Glacier NP from the east coast

Sounds like you want to?
Flip a coin; if you’re happy about the result, do that, but if you get the urge to flip again… that’s just as telling :)

If you can, why not?

It's so fucking weird that trains are more expensive than flying in the US.

Wife has to do several out-of-state cons, and she loves it. As long as you've GOT the time, you can relax!

Time off is limited. Do you really want to use more of your time off on getting to your destination?

Yes.

You're much more likely to be in a crash on a train than in a plane.
Kimmykix
You're more likely to die in a plane crash, than a train crash.

Per basis, but over all no

If you have the time and money, do it. Life is very short. Enjoy it as much as you can.

Hell yeah... trains are better than planes in SOO many ways, and they are MUCH better for the environment!
Volpe42
They start a lot more wildfires too
Kimmykix
And yet are still better for the environment.
SigilLovesSpace
Given the amount of aviation related disasters the past year, I’d just go with a train. Sounds like significantly less stress all around.
Volpe42
Trains are still more likely to have a crash
SigilLovesSpace
Still less stress via railway than everything involved with flying.
SigilLovesSpace
Also I just looked that up, wtf is going on with trains to have that many disasters
Volpe42
They cross roads and drivers are crazy
