Don't worry, most of them will still have income rolling in from multiple sources that are not on the books. What should happen is they lose money every day the government is shut down and never get it back... it should be a large and painful sum, so that even their bribe monies are affected. This is the problem with "modern" politics... there are no personal consequences for anything these people do. Power without consequences is the reason we are experiencing this dumpster fire of a timeline.

This is an excellent way to attack people like AOC, who is trying to do the right thing. If you support this action, then you do not want AOC or others who are trying not to be bribed to be unable to stay in office. If you support this, then you want to be ruled by the wealthy and the corrupt. You want oligarchs to be unhindered in their desires. To support this is to deny Democracy.

AOC was just an example of who could be hurt. Find your favorite Senator who actually needs his paycheck, and this will harm them. Or any future Senator who wants to run but doesn't have the wealth necessary to maintain multiple homes in some of the most expensive areas in the country.

Honestly, I don't like the line of thought that basically goes "look what they get paid, when the rest of us are struggling." I get it, I really do, but there's a reason. If their pay is sufficient, there can be no excuse for corruption, ostensibly. You can treat it like a much harsher crime, which we should, and on some level, used to. That's what leads to performative bullshit like this. Don't be performative; just fix it.

Contractors' money is already guaranteed and not directly impacted by the shutdown. The money is "in a piggy bank", which they are given after providing the contracted good or service.
It is possible that, during the shutdown, the service may be paused (depending on the service). Others continue despite the shutdown.

Either way, "pay" is almost certainly separate from their expense accounts, so the whole thing doesn't mean shit.

No. You lose that pay. We get paid for work, unless it's a vacation, approved of course. Also, they should only make what the lowest wage in their state is. Incentive.

I always thought they should put their pay in escrow and provide what they need to do their job directly. House, food, transportation, clothes, etc... Then, when they leave office, a vote of their constituents is held and their approval rating amongst voters determines the percentage of their back pay they get. The rest goes to education.

Some of them aren't rich. Chris Murphy joined 12 years ago with like $80k of student loans from UConn law. I get he's the exception, not the norm, but I doubt he's beating his salary in equity gains.

The latter just says you only want rich people to be able to afford to hold elected office.
For the former: I'd set elected officials wages as a fixed multiple of the minimum wage (different multiples for different positions). Require a supermajority to raise the multiplier, and just a majority to raise the minimum wage.
Or we could just automatically add an automatic Cost Of Living Adjustment to the minimum wage.
