Long before covid my nephew died of the flu. He had gotten the flu shot that year. My mom, his grandma, got angry and didn't get the flu shot for years. She was a nurse. She knew the stats on effectiveness. She knew he would have died with or without the shot and possibly faster without it. It wasn't until her hospital started requiring it of nurses that she got it again. I still don't understand her logic. Why blame the shot? It tried.

When I told my dad we were having a baby girl he cried with happiness. Two years later he still hadn't met her because his girlfriend refused to let him get the COVID shot.
He finally got it, and has flown here to meet her a few times, but he won't get the booster. And now he can't fly because of complications from shingles, because he didn't get that vaccination either.

I learned academically what some live through. My Dad is an MD with an MPH. I grew up understanding that public health measures save more lives than medicine alone, and when they work in concert, they change civilization.
We have a few deniers in the extended family. So far, all the ones I know of are younger than me, and none of them have lost the communicable disease lottery.

Worked with a guy who's cousin was on the anti-vax trip (for covid idk about others). Posted mocking shit and memes on fb all the time about. He was prob upper 40s. He died. I had seen his posts on HermanCain awards subreddit, but thiught the last name was coincidental till my coworker told me his cousins name. The people who say their immune systems are strong have been sheltered by herd immunity without realizing it. Like house cats living in a bubble they don't understand while espousing their fierce independence. My wife's mom basically said she wasn't going to get the shot, bc she thought it was dangerous. The issue is, vaccines work so not a lot of people have actually witnessed what life was like before that. So we get mass amounts of misinformation about how they don't work because they're not actively eradicating anything. They're doing their job perfectly, so we never have to see it.

Man. As an archaeologist who occasionally has to document older cemeteries, including disused historic cemeteries, smaller family plots and such, The amount of child graves I see.
Nothing sobers you up more than walking into some rural cemetery that hasn't been on a map in the last 100 years and seeing almost a quarter of the headstones having little lambs on them.

Vaccines don't fight the virus. They teach your immune system how recognize the enemy so your immune system can fight it.
Thats it.
Used to be we killed the enemy virus and showed his dead body to the immune system so they could recognize it next time. Sometimes we needed a live enemy but weakened to a safe level to do the job. That was a bit more dangerous as the enemy was still alive.

The immune system is strong yes. But it will not fight a virus it does not know is a problem until it becomes a problem. At that point you started the fight late.
A vaccine lets you fight it as soon as it shows up, before it gets a chance to build its numbers in your body. Vaccines don't fight. They just show your body what to fight to give you that very important head start.
