When you're tired of something sitting, you stop caring after some time. My aunt sold her house and we had to get rid of a bunch of furnitures. A European style bedroom set that she paid well over $2k at the time ended up being given away for free because the house had to be empty by the end of December.
there isnt much mental acuity needed for music...to play an instrument you need some basic motoric skills, but piano is actually not that hard, big hands help a lot, but thats about it, the rest is disciplined practise...and then you gotta learn to read notes, but thats not hard either...actually becoming a GOOD musician is a whole different deal, there you need talent and good hearing and start at 3yo and shit like that probably...but just to have fun is not difficult...piano costs money tho...

It's suggested to get it tuned every 6 months. If you are in a better controlled space as far as temp and humidity, then you can get by every 12 months. More if you dont play often.
My parents piano has a dehumidifier in it. Always thought it was weird to have such an old piano with a cord and plug. Helps to keep the wood from warping and expanding/contracting which would change the tone.
Because electronic pianos became very good and affordable. No tuning, no problems because of humidity, portable…. I still got a real one at my dad‘s place. But i play (and teach my daughter) on a electric one. Best part? I can rock out all i want using headphones, disturbing nobody! 👍
Absolutely! But you can ad external speakers, that get you very, very close. Not all the way, but i say at least 95-99% depending on -again -the money you are willing to spend. I have a decent set, i say i‘m around 95%. Which is plenty for me. 😉

I'm just a layman but it does seem like there would be a lot of detailed woodwork. Even having a grinder pushing out rough blanks, there would still need to be someone with a steady hand in order to as you said, make it sound right.
But it doesn't sound as good as a quality piano. In the hands of the right musician, it can make adults laugh and cry. Music is the one common language spoken around the world. It can inspire generations long after you are gone.

It has the additional benefit of playing good music even if the operator is an average poor musician
