Apparently pollution is only "innovation" when somebody else gets to breathe it.

I'm trying to figure out what the downside to datacenters using nuclear power is. One of the drawbacks to nuclear power is that changing the output is slow, so it can't be quite as reactive to dynamic power needs (e.g. AC systems getting run more in the day and less at night), but that isn't nearly so much of an issue with datacenters, as they have a much more steady power draw.

Theres no issues. We need a shit ton of Data centers even if AI dies tomorrow. We are literally using them to communicate right now. Bringing nuclear into it is just old school anti nuclear and anti science hysteria. Nuclear power is ideal for them. being powered by nuclear with a closed loop cooling system for the data center is about the ideal model.

"if you don't want datacenters then you shouldn't have access to commute" - I don't mean to stereotype but I'm fairly sure that if the entire AI sector vanished tomorrow the only way those communities would notice is through their environment suddenly getting cleaner and quieter.
Hell, I work in software engineering and removing the datacenters in my area and cutting off access to compute would improve my days immeasurably due to the decrease in stupid shit I have to deal with.

The only people that WANT AI in everything are the people selling it. It has its uses, but the existing datacenters could easily and comfortably cover the actual uses. But because they're sticking it everywhere, they're effectively creating the 'demand' they use to justify massive investments for more datacenters.

No-one needs the generative shit. Yes you can use it to make shit code and docs that require significant manual review before letting it out into the world but for anything else building or finding a machine learning models for specific purposes and using them for free forever is the far better option.
Alas that requires paying for expertise and the law of capitalism dictates that we opt for the short term savings and the eventual expensive consequences are the next financial quarter's problem.

I tried out the generative thing once because I wanted a specific icon for a D&D prop and I couldn't find one online. In the time I spent writing and revising and revising and revising the prompt to get the least unsatisfactory result I could stomach I could have just sat down and doodled a hundred of them much closer to what I wanted but the old sunk cost fallacy kept me plugging away at rephrasing "spooky museum" over and over.

Not to take away from the point, but there should be quite a few dots around SV and NYC. Mark Zuckerberg lives 1mi from the Equinix DC in palo alto. Billionaire's row in NYC is about 3.5 miles from the DCs in lower manhattan or across the river in NJ. Wealth is what insulates them from the realities of DCs, not distance.

The SV8 (Equinix DC in palo alto) is more of a 'colo' (colocation) and is an ant in size. Colocation centers are the least carbon-intensive type of data centers. Whereas a Hyperscale data center require acreage and emit million metric ton of pollution. It's these Hyperscale data centers you'll never find rich people wanting to live near it.

Rich people make certain that industrial development happens 'some place else', not where they live. Tax the rich. Double the Federal Minimum Wage. Single payer health care.

Always vote. All three of my kids, always vote as well. They call out their peers that don't, and far to many of their peers did not vote in 2024. "Both sides are the same!" Until you FAFO that it is not true. As my most progressive/socialist son says "we're all on the same bus, and right now we need to get it headed in the right direction and stop focusing on the next stop."
