Pottery Advent Calendar

Right before Covid hit I took a hand-building pottery class with a friend. I made a cup, and a couple small houses and decided that I would like to make an entire Christmas village. The pottery shop owner was so in love with my idea that even though the shop was shut down, she sold me some clay and the kiln space and glaze I needed to get the project done!

25 buildings and trees, large enough for tea lights to be placed underneath - one to be lit each night of December until Christmas Day when the whole village gets to be lit up.

In my deconstruction existential crises that I’ve been going through I learned that the “stable” Mary & Joseph, had to have Jesus in, was likely actually the front room of your average Jewish house - it’s just that usually the animals were brought in at night to sleep there.

In honour of that, I tried to model the final house/stable to be relatively accurate to the Jewish houses of the time period.
