By default, emergency alerts will ALWAYS play sound since they're usually concerning something important like a natural disaster or impending nuclear war. But, most smartphones allow you to make it so that they don't play sound if your phone is on silent, or you can just turn them off entirely. My phone has separate toggles for AMBER alerts, test alerts, public safety alerts, and emergency alerts.

Presidential messages cannot be disabled or silenced by law. You should shut the phone off, and you may also want to ensure that when you turn it back on that you are no where near the abuser, since these systems can get backlogged pretty severely. Source: I work with a company that integrates with IPAWS, and they usually keep even regional alerts active for 1 hour, so it MAY reattempt either at their level or the carrier level.

You may be right. Was thinking a burner phone would be an older model, so a flip phone or some such because it's supposedly expendable (and I personally wouldn't buy new stuff just to toss it). But then this isn't about me is it; I'm not in that situation so nvm. :)

Yeah, people with burner phones for safety have already opted out of these notifications or at least have everything on silent. Maybe there's a few dumb criminals who haven't but they're just hiding info on their phones, not the phone itself.

If they moved in or something perhaps sure, of they were at like a dead end of an area, but if there's even one state roadway going through your area you probably get a lot more pass-thru traffic than you might realize or pay attention to.

Around here, we get a flood alert at least once a month for most of the year. It's been years since we've had flooding bad enough to close off roads. The amber alerts are rarer, but they almost exclusively go off in the middle of the night.

Yiss. I actually got my first tornado warning last month during the freak tropical storm though, plus the storm warning itself, a wildfire that was already happening, flash flood, high wind/surf, and no alert but there was that earthquake north of LA. Like the Avatar showed up to give us disaster bingo. In my part it’s normally just a few flash flood warnings from rare rain, sometimes fire and the occasional fugitive trying to run to Mexico.

Yeah, im in Illinois and it's always kind of weird because everyone's phones make the same strange tonal buzzing noise at almost the same time. Usually it's extreme weather (storms, floods, blizzard) or an Amber alert (kidnapping)
