I start my first real job in 6 hours

Wasted a lot of money and disappointed a lot of people. Dropped out and went to Alaska. Climbed, rafted, kayaked, had an epiphany. A history degree was not for me.

Decided to get a degree in Outdoor education...for reasons

"ohhh so a non-traditional degree" heard that shit a lot

Always followed by a look that just said "Good luck with your poor life choices". Didn't let it bother me because outdoor ed is tits

I get to do this all winter

Not me, but sadly one of the douche canoes you run in to in this kind of job. "I don't know what I want to do so I spend mommy and daddies money on climbing gear"

I hoped after graduation I could slide in to a nice full time guiding gig. Make them dolla bills doing what I loved, buy a house and a dog and shit. But no, I dove in and took what ever seasonal guiding gigs I could. Which meant living in my truck and eating ramen hamburger upside down pasta a lot.

I don't mind the seasonal work, but living in the car and in tents for 4 months at a time wears on you. Also the pay is dirt. At least PBR is cheap.

But what ever I had to do, it was ok because I love the work.

Applied to every full time job I could, sent out like 60 Resumes. No idea how to fancy e on imgur. Never heard back from any. Needed a job for real, getting married to previously mentioned climbing babe.

Just as I finished filling the glass to the top, with that frothy ramen/pabst piss, and resigned myself to another sumer of seasonal the phone rang..

Aw yeah outdoor instructor at a therapy school! Money, benies. An opportunity to use outdoor education to enrich children's lives, and to help them build some much needed confidence.

I bought a metric fuck ton of Khaki pants, shirts with collars, and a comb.

I get what you mean about the "get a real degree" thing. Majoring in Wildlife Biology, get it a lot from my family. Buttfuckit, I<3wildlife.

I went to a trade school. I have an aunt who always tells me how disappointed she is that I didn't go to university. I got a full time (1/2)

salary job, less than a month after I finished classes, and didn't even apply for it. My aunt is unemployed. Follow your dreams, kids. (2/2)

Additionally: I went to an art school, and was told I was "wasting" my artistic talent by taking media design by multiple teachers.

What is a trade school-- like specific schools for mechanics, computers, culinary, etc?

I think it's very different from country to country - I live in Canada and it means that the school I went to teaches everything hands (1/?)

a specific program with set classes and had to take all of them to graduate (unlike universities here where you can kinda pick and (3/?)

I'm worried about that stance whenever I have kids at that point. My parents had that view for me, but I haven't found a solid job yet. 1/2

It's never too late, and college major isn't guaranteed employment. And it's definitely not guaranteed happiness.

P.S. 80% of jobs are landed via networking. Get out there and get to know some folks! Do an unpaid internship if you have to.

That's how I got the job I have now-- unpaid internship.

life. My mum died because she couldnt pay her phone bill and couldnt ring for help when her kidney failed. She was 45 and still up shit 2/3

creek. Found her old bills and she was paying off a $500 phone bill at $10 a week while going through chemo. I dont want to end up like that
