as a left-leaning USian, I am trying to stay positive and I'm impressed so far by Mexico's President Claudia Scheinbaum. She's not letting donald trunp push her around. Mexico and her people are resourceful, creative, and resilient.
todayok
Regarding the neighbour to the north, Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau is finally taking their immigration mess a tiny bit more seriously, because shitty as Trump is, he has forced Justin to get off his ass (for a minute or two).
MouseKeyboard
She's also pushing through some very suspect judicial reforms that require all judges to be elected. If you're American you should know what a bad idea selecting judges through party politics is.
dagagirl
I would love Claudia if she would have had some accountability for the Metro disaster (metropolitan Subway in Mexico crumbled when she was in charge) or the Rebsamen school tragedy.
Sadly, no politician accepts their mistakes.
f3n1x187
la linea 12 disaster was swept under the rug, they have the nerve of avoiding the topic altogether and we're supposed to think they are better than when Calderon had the ABC kindergarden disaster.
Acc87
I mean support who you want, for first you have to survive another four years of Cheeto who your people voted into office, and fight for your right to ever vote again. There's no one to help you with that.
spazztastic
What a time to be alive, Mexico is both less racist and smarter than we are.
wheelsonebuthaditheofffell
hope it lasts. donald trump is not a person. he is a parasite
Mikataki
He's only a figurehead, albeit one who started the far-right maga garbage. Bannon is just as bad.
MaamTheDomeIsAnOptionYouDidNotOrder
Worse, because Bannon understands what he's doing.
bippityboppitybuttsex
His entire social class are parasites.
Neednoggle
Dunno why you got downvotes for that comment, it's just the objective truth.
I mean, I do know why, but y'know what I mean.
bippityboppitybuttsex
I am used to it, I have downvote fairies... I pissed off a lot of people...
f3n1x187
........fun thing is she is every bit populist as her predecesor was and the same type as Trump is, don't fall in the lie of being Left leaning, Politicians in Mexico are worse self serving than Americans, there is literally not a single good one.
Chilangoruler
Are this posts bots? I can't believe people who Google scheinbaum never find the articles about the deaths of the metro, the kids that died in the earthquake, all the crime in CDMX and extortion, his ex husband in video tapes receiving money, her daughter with scholarships, her receiving a salary from UNAM without working, her mother in the Panama papers
CobainsSarcoma
not a bot. i obviously didn't get the full story but i do find some encouragement. CDMX is an awesome city and I hope to visit again soon. no, not everything i read was complimentary.
Chilangoruler
Imagine that after it's four years trump nominates Marjorie Taylor Greene as the next president, that's Claudia, it's just there to follow orders, that's why she is destroying institutions equivalent to EPA, FTC, OGE and taking control of the judiciary system, morena party is like GOP, they want an authoritarian government and if you don't agree you are a traitor
CobainsSarcoma
hmm interesting take, and im sure you know more about it than i do. thanks very much for the explanation.

The entire Mexican culture is amazing if you immerse yourself in it and don’t be a fucking cabron

Is that like a jabroni?

She made covid her bitch, while orange said it was a democratic hoax
f3n1x187
Her Boss, former president and good friend said he only needed two pictures to ward himself from Covid, everyone in his cabinet and her as chief of the government of Mexico city danced around questions whether AMLO was going to follow the international recommendations around COVID or not.

Chilangoruler
Yeah sure, that's why in CDMX where she was the governor the health department gave people Ivermectin without telling people https://www.bmj.com/content/377/bmj.o917
OutOfTheHat
as was the fashion at the time... I got my ivermectin shots, and they were prescribed by an inmunologist. The line was "no body knows for sure, but just in case they help"
Chilangoruler
Read the link, they give ivermectin without telling the patients what it was, and also that statement is false, the who never recommend ivermectin and said to only use it in trials to validate it https://www.who.int/news-room/feature-stories/detail/who-advises-that-ivermectin-only-be-used-to-treat-covid-19-within-clinical-trials
OutOfTheHat
I hear you. But when you are 5 days into high, delirium causing fevers, coughing your lungs out and self-contained in a room to avoid getting your family sick, you will take anything that the doctor recommends, not go into the WHO pages to get a second opinion. -- Even the doctors visits were via whatsapp, because "everybody knew" a visit to the hospital meant certain death -- either because it was a last ditch effort, or because they were so stuffed they had no time to care for you there.
Chilangoruler
They were using the vet stuff for their trials, and I get you, it was hell at the beginning, more because they never recommend face masks or anything the WHO said, they never kicked COVID ass, mexico was one of the worst in mortality rate
OutOfTheHat
and... I did take ivermectin as prescribed. Not in secret. This was in the early days... I guess I was one of the last ones in my city to find ivermectin at a reasonable price, before it quintupled and people started looking for the vet stuff. The problem was the oxygen tank. Luckily my wife was able to find a tank with a family member... 1/2
OutOfTheHat
There was no way to purchase a tank even from the big cities back then. I feel that I was sick, but my wife suffered more because I was stuck in bed, and she had to do the caring and finding stuff 2/2
bloxxing
i suppose that means she isn't going to pay for the wall...
tzahtman
You can like both, just one, or neither, there is no need to treat it like a personal relationship and you're being unfaithful to one.
TheOvy
I'm not so sure about the judicial reform she helped pass that turns judges into politicians
DarkSock
Unfortunately America is about to get the government deserves… Which, for progressives, means someone else is about to shit our pants.
ArgentXero
One of the ONLY leaders that didn't suffer from the "anti-incumbant" elections. As if that was real. You give a homeless man 2 pennys and tell them their life is better for it. They are going to be insulted.
Jewdakris
She does seem like an interesting and strong candidate, but there are also concerns that she was essentially put there by cartels. A lot of us don't understand how truly powerful the cartels can be in Mexico, just like the rich fuckheads we have in the USA. Money and influence usually go hand in hand.
eggmuffin
Who makes those accusations? Mexico has a history of cartel-sponsored corruption, but they also have a history of conservative politicians accusing their opposition of being cartel-stooges in order to deflect similar accusations made against them.
So it is very relevant to determine where the accusations are coming from, and who stands to benefit from making them.
(I ask from a point of ignorance, I have little knowledge of Mexico's current political reality.)
f3n1x187
It is no secret that A) MORENA works under the old oficialismo rules from the old PRI, where the President calls the shots and everyone has to fall in line and B) AMLO took suspiciously too many trips to Badiraguato hometown of el chapo, something no president even the ones so called narco presidents ever did. Then there is the time AMLO let one of el chapo's sons go when the military arrested him without him knowing, he bent the knee inmediately.
f3n1x187
and before some one comments about trying to avoid blood shed.....we are already there you dummies! just check Culiacan since september this year, they've been under siege and AMLO's government and Scheinbaums have done fuck all.
hollenqual
What? You wanna talk about narco-presidents? Peña, Calderón (specially Calderón), Even Salinas de Gortari. Sheinbaum had to make a deal with the circle that really run the country, and owns the cartels and the army. I do not like her or anyone in power, but if you are kind of spreading misinformation.
f3n1x187
My brother in christ, NONE of those presidents had video of shaking hands with the mother of one of the most notorious narco in mexico IN SAID NARCO HOME TURF, that was all AMLO, that bull shit of abrasos no balazos is not working, ask Culiacan.
And Scheinbaum was 100% picked to follow orders from the party. Any and all candidates that would've been nominated for MORENA would have been the same, they brought back the oficialismo of 1970 PRI.
hollenqual
Sure. Since there are no videos, the fraud in 88 never happened, right? Paramilitary forces trained by the army? The army controlling the golden triangle since the early 00's? Abrazos no balazos was just a stupid slogan. Tell me what led the country to this situation if not the war against the drugs startedby Calderón (he exterminated the autodefensas to help the cartels). Sheinbaum and AMLO are pigs if you want, but you can not brush away the past 30 years preceding morena.
f3n1x187
Well ask AMLO the architect of that steal was the head of CFE during his whole administration. Spare me the 30 years bullshit.
LMAO ran for president for 18 fucking years of those 30 and had time to come up with a security project and 6 to implemented and we only got a shitty-ass airport that is a pain for planes to land and a refinery that hasn't refined anything at all. And Scheinbaum was picked as candidate specifically to continue with the same bullshit
hollenqual
What? So it is not Calderón-Peñas fault, it was AMLO the one who did wrong everything? He saw how the narcostate was being imposed, so he must came with a solution? What a strange point of view. Again the argument about the AIFA vs Texcoco... a pain for airplanes to land? Speaking of bullshit.
DerpyWombat13

She's a Scientist.... While we have a reality show freak https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudia_Sheinbaum
Elkarlo77
Women, president and physisist. She should be beware of a Republican US President getting behind her. Fun fact: One of the few Politicians not having their finger Prints taken by high res Camera's is Merkel.
qwertdeep
What do you mean by that fun fact?
loperinter
Keep reading about her, you'll find she's a "climate scientist" who allowed massive logging and supports her predecessor's boondoggle refinery. Her policies are bad in their own ways. Just because someone stands up to Trump, doesn't make them an automatic "good guy."
DaveTheScientist
You're saying climate scientists should all be against the logging industry? Why? It's a renewable resource (as long as it's not clear cutting) and important for a lot of other industries.
loperinter
No, I'm saying all leaders should be held accountable for their actions and not just praised blindly if they do one good thing (and fyi, this one thing is to some extent just an easy PR win).
DaveTheScientist
Hell yes they should. What about the Mexican logging industry should she be held to account for? I don't know much about the current Mexican political landscape.
loperinter
She's essentially a populist authoritarian. More slick and polished than her mentor/predecessor AMLO, but just as dangerous if not more. She's a fan of "post-truth" (posverdad) messaging and her party has been chipping away at democratic and independent institutions, see the recent judicial reform.
cytherians
There are people who've climbed up to very high places that did not sacrifice their personal integrity or dignity. They are smart, diligent, and adept at dealing with those beneath their station. Scheinbaum Pardo would make mincemeat out of Trump if she got the chance to debate any subject with Trump.
f3n1x187
Anyone would make minced meat of Trump, his base and his narcissist ass don't care
cytherians
I'm looking forward to the day when they have to publicly complain about what Trump's policies have done to them.
f3n1x187
And Ben Carson is a world renown neurosurgeon and look how he is as a politician and public servant, so far she has not shown an inclination of being better than her predecesor and every bit as populist as the whole party is.
TheJuiceLoosener
Word salad like this makes me think you have nothing to actually say.

It helps if you read all the words. Better luck next time.

The internet has ruined me to the word scientist

RIGHT?! I was like wtf, no way. Then a minute later I was like 'You idiot' :D

Yeah, so not a "scientist" scientist

What I don’t understand is supposedly male United States Latino voters went for tRump because ya know women weak, couldn’t run a country- so could someone explain it to me why Mexican male voters didn’t have that problem with Scheinbaum…
ComradeBinch
Thats not the reason they went for trump though. Amazingly kamala being a woman wasnt even brought up and notice she herself never even ran on possibly "being the first woman president". This is strictly american politics, propaganda, and culture that won trump the election.
ButtblasterMcAssmaster
Trump made huge gains with Hispanic men, but did not win a majority. They still voted something like 52-48 for Harris, compared to white men who overwhelmingly voted Trump. I've seen a lot of people commenting on voter trends who only seemed to hear about the first part.
f3n1x187
MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF POPULISM, literally the same campaing as Trump, the oposition were chock full of inepts that couldn't platform a good candidate.
ComradeBinch
Correct! I see people are still upset with the idea that kamala was unpopular, she was, but democrats first and foremost NEED to run a populist campaign to ever win again.
f3n1x187
I meant on the mexican elections, where PAN and Galvez were 100% inept, Kamala/Waltz were damn good candidates, its just Populism speeches get pervasive and have to be thoroughly dissassembled and that takes longer than 100 days.
Chereazi
Both candidates of the popular parties that were expected to win were women. So that doesn't apply there.
f3n1x187
Both populists and god awful candidates.
f3n1x187
I fucking love your downvotes you dumbasses /s. Xochitl Galvez was massively unprepared to run for Presidency her candidacy was basically called out by AMLO, the PRI-PAN-PRD (Political parties that have always been enemies) was fill to the brim with corruption......and what corruption didn't fit on those three parties was sent to MORENA, AMLO's party that Scheinbaum servers is a word for word reproduction of the officialist pre 1980 PRI party that sank México in multiple recessions.
OutOfTheHat
she is the protegé of a president who had cult-like following. If he said vote for her, they did. Whether they (López Obrador and Scheinbaum) are actually good for the country or just more of the same, is up for debate. But for sure, They are very polarized. They are either loved or hated.
SquirtVonnegut
Where are you getting that information from? I've heard a lot of campaign operatives proposing reasons for why they lost, but they actually have no idea what they're talking about. If they had their finger on the pulse of these communities, they would've won. They're falling back on racist stereotypes rather than interrogating what they did wrong.
18booma
Hmm, is it possible that gender didn't play into people's decision as much as others claim it did? Sheinbaum is a real leftist who put forward a popular and expansive economic plan. The moment a party with a real leftist economic programme gains traction, the right has no answer.
montyman185
The sexism certainly didn't help, but the main reason she lost is that the Democrats are a bunch of spineless cowards that refuse to have an original opinion, have to run everything they claim to believe by advisors, and refused to throw Biden under the bus to distance themselves from him.
They had freaking Bill Clinton and Liz Cheney campaigning, who the hell was that going to win over?
Chereazi
Just like programs like abolishing slavery and raising minimum wage had traction in California?
Both failed...
18booma
No, I'm not talking about a ballot measure. I'm not even talking about a policy. A programme in this context is a coherent collection of policies that, if implemented, would drive the country (or state, city, whatever) in a specific idealogical direction.
bippityboppitybuttsex
Not a lot of Sephardic Jews as leaders of large countries... it was weird to see.
(if you don't know, Sephardic Jews are those from Spain and Portugal who were booted out in 1492, we ended up across the Mediterranean, in Italy, Greece, Turkey.... one other world leader, I can think of, is Benjamin Disraeli. Also, Peter Sellers and Hank Azaria and Paula Abdul)...
On another note, the oldest Jewish Congregation in the United States is also Sephardic, dating to 1654...
OutOfTheHat
Even in this case, her defenders had to explain that she was a non-practicing jew... so as to not enfuirate the antisemites around here (unfortunately that is too ingrained into the culture here)
bippityboppitybuttsex
I mean, Mexico is a VERY Catholic country... I am sephardic and non-practicing too...
OutOfTheHat
I live out in the country right now. Many of the communities around here have all but left the Catholic church... And still, they blame the Jews for killing Jesus.... and taking over the world, and... and... and... God it makes me so mad!
bippityboppitybuttsex
Yeah, so, we really don't have that kind of power... they are thinking of billionaire oligarchs, some of whom do happen to be Jews, but most of them are false Christians (i.e. opposing everything Jesus said in Mathew).
OutOfTheHat
I know.... I know... I'm glad I didn't mention the space lasers.. but still... On the other hand I don't think it's so much about the religion as is the anti-muslim, anti-jew sentiment we inherited from our imperialistic overlords, way back in the day when Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
TheCunningLinguists
There would have been older Sephardic Congregations if it weren't for the all the Jews who converted to avoid the ... dun dun dun.. Spanish Inquisition.
Whatdoyousaytoanicecupoftea
Hang on, what country does Paula Abdul run....I want to move there
cattlegrazer82
The same year Columbus sailed the ocean blue?
bippityboppitybuttsex
Yup... the same people who sent him did this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_Jews_from_Spain
I will note, this wasn't the only time we got kicked out of a country... the UK did the same thing in 1290... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edict_of_Expulsion
BipedalHumanoidWithSlightlyDifferentNoseRidge
Ha. Forget it, she won't come and save you.
NeverDownvoteMelBrooks
Will she accept immigrants (refugees?) if we promise to not make a ruckus?
CobainsSarcoma
my friend is asking the same question
BipedalHumanoidWithSlightlyDifferentNoseRidge
Their (border) farms are always in need of labour, seeing as their neighbour keeps stealing them....
CobainsSarcoma
if she can set an example of positivity, then god bless her
BipedalHumanoidWithSlightlyDifferentNoseRidge
War on the cartels is the only way she can stay positive, which is a very dangerous task.
CobainsSarcoma
fighting for women's rights, lgbtq equality, and the environment are all positives. the cartels are a big problem but not the only one
BipedalHumanoidWithSlightlyDifferentNoseRidge
Understood. But the cartels do not care who you are or what rights you claim.
f3n1x187
Hard to fight for the environment when she has shown no inclination of the previous president's policies to go all in on oil and gas and over regulate and kill the renewable energy market.
codenameRadical
She actually stands for shit. She actually said she'd do progressive shit. And as a result, she won. That's the lesson the democratic party should learn, instead of pretending that abandoning trans people will finally be the thing that makes nazis like them.
LoudBirb
Uhhh... I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but she's the direct successor to Mexico's version of Trump and her party is currently making a dictatorial power grab to take away the court system's ability to check (of "checks and balances" legend) the legislative branch. She's leaving all of the policies the previous admin started in place, including ramping up oil & has expansion at the expense of renewables. The Democratic party should probably not be learning too many lessons from her.
codenameRadical
"The National Regeneration Movement (Spanish: Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional), commonly referred to by its syllabic abbreviation Morena (Spanish pronunciation: [moˈɾena]), is a major left-wing populist political party in Mexico."
Her crime stance involves ... finding and addressing root causes. She's a scientist. Her work includes trying to reduce violence against women, boosting education funding, and supported people choosing what uniform they wear to school, regardless of gender.
codenameRadical
Where Obrador was also anti mask during the pandemic, she was for masks. She talked about people staying at home. Yes, there is the power thing, and some institutional inertia, but there's definitely some disagreement, outside of that. But the lesson democrats should be learning is that running on populist topics about lowering poverty. Social programs, scholarships, minimum wage bumps, affordable housing, public transit, against an opposition that did a lot of dog whistling.
codenameRadical
In short, when Obama said "hope and change", that's why he won. People want change, in America. All democrats have to learn is that standing for the status quo, rich donors, and center right ideas over progressive ideas ... won't do any good. They don't get GOP voters, and their core base stays home. Whether they should or not, that's the fact of it. So we can pick candidates who stand up for things like that ... or we can keep losing.
KawhiLeonardIsSenpai
That's what I figured out when I was researching her. Hence why I was confused by this meme and why Democrats suddenly like her lmao
codenameRadical
Mixed bag. There's definitely issues with her seeming like maybe a continuation of something heading toward authoritarianism. This /is/ concerning. But she's the first female president, and she ran on affordable housing, minimum wage increases, public transit, social programs, and just lowering poverty in general. That's real, actual progressivism. The opposition went negative, with tons of dog whistles. Progressive ideas won. That's the lesson.
codenameRadical
That said, the center right corporate democrats probably like her because she's the first female president, while being mean to Trump, which is ... understandable, but sort of misses the "progressive ideas work" part of the lesson.
marvinTraveler
Mexican here.
Taking your meme at “face value” I know you have good intentions, I really do.
However, your post also reeks of ignorance. Claudia was handpicked by the previous guy, and she has not deviated one bit from his designs, nor such a thing was ever expected. She might have a PhD, and yet she is above all a politician.
The current Mexican regime is the most corrupt in at least 40 years. I’m not kidding or being paranoid. Between Claudia and the Orange Turd the future looks bleak.
DanOrtega
You weren't around for the last 60 years, didn't you? We are far from perfect but its NOWHERE near what we had under ruling party PRI, or even under the PAN.
marvinTraveler
I’ve been closely following this cruel joke called “Mexican politics” for more than 35 years now.
The current majority party was created by taking anyone from another party which happened to pledge allegiance to AMLO, then whatever they’ve done in the past was no longer an issue. Individuals with last names as Bartlett and Yunes are among the most nauseating examples of a practice so cynical that it’s borderline satire.
They are not different, they are the same, the worst among them.
needtogetcreative
Also Mexican and I can’t say I agree with your statement that AMLOs government being the most corrupt when Carlos Salina’s did more corrupt shit.
SquirtVonnegut
So the old guy who was in charge endorsed his female protege who refused to deviate from his plan? Yeah, Americans can't identify with that.
f3n1x187
Less endorse and more designated, I know Kamala's candidacy was a sore point for not having a second Primary, but it is distictly different running a candidate for running out of time, than Specifically apointing a very specific candidate that you know will follow your orders, years before the election happens (Claudia's candidacy illegally and unofficially began early last year) we call that oficialismo in Mexico. Something we thought we had abandoned in the 2000 election.
CobainsSarcoma
thank you for the measured response. good luck. seems like we will all need as much as we can get.
marvinTraveler
Thanks a lot for calling a response which contains the word “ignorance” as “measured”.
I wish we could have a lot of respectful yet energetic and informed debates about our problems. It’s dearly needed in a public sphere where politicians have taken advantage of virtual echo chambers and poisoned so many conversations, looking to sow hate among common people.
