The vast majority of US politicians and our history is in lock step with everything they are doing. Do they buy some politicians to help bolster this alliance, sure, but it's not at all counter to US interests, from a really terrible utilitarian perspective.
We love bombing ME civilians so much, it doesn't take much incitement.

People don't realise how much the rise of communism was just a backlash against brutal extortion. All those people in South America, Central America, Asia, etc. didn't just overthrow their governments because they read Das Kapital and found it super convincing. I did get a chance to take history of the Vietnam war, which went in depth, but the others were maybe a quick chapter. Then again, I graduated in 2003, so some of it wasn't a focus like now.

My teachers didn't mention the middle east at all. I took a mandatory class called modern problems, nothing east of Greece or West of Japan came up at all. Strange because most of my teachers should have remembered the events around the Iranian revolution pretty well based on their age.
