It's mind-blowing how out of touch these people are. I grew up running ELIZA on my C64, which got old pretty fast. I also gave ChatGPT a test drive a while ago and it felt the same to me. It's a way to pass 5 minutes by asking it to explain something that doesn't exist and frown at the fever dreams it hallucinates in response, but I have no desire to ever use it again. I mostly want to get actual work done on my PC, not fuck around with a modern day ELIZA.

TO SHUT OFF AI: Disable Connected Experiences: Go to File → Account → Manage Settings → Privacy Settings.
Turn off: “Optional connected experiences”, “Connected experiences that download online content”, “Experiences that analyze your content”. This cuts off most cloud-AI access (Copilot, Editor, Designer, etc.).
In Word / Excel / PowerPoint / Outlook, go to: File → Options → Advanced → Copilot / Microsoft 365 Chat / AI features.
Uncheck “Enable Copilot” or “Show Copilot in this app.”

AI, in my opinion, is only good for two things. It's great at hunting down one-off or truly obscure information and it's useful as a tool to encourage creation. By the last one, I don't mean stealing art I mean getting creative juices flowing.
Beyond that it can never replace people because if you hand it anything remotely complex then it stumbles around, it can't make good decisions in unique situations, and it's made so nice it makes errors intentional to please the user.

I had a Windows phone, a Lumia 630 running Windows 10, and the UI was fantastic. I'd go back to it today in a heartbeat if it had the apps I need. But they killed Windows Phone. I loved using Cortana, it was useful and could work without a network (unlike Siri) but they killed that too. They didn't just stop developing it, they actively removed features and then removed it. Windows still has a Fax And Scan utility FFS but they couldn't leave Cortana on people's machines because reasons.

AI is impressive when you're asking it about something you don't know anything about, because the answer it spits out seems sufficient to someone who doesn't know what might be wrong with it, but once you ask it about something in which you're a consummate expert, you'll see that it falls apart under any scrutiny. That's why it's a bad tool, because only someone who already knows what they're doing will be able to catch its' mistakes, but an expert wouldn't need it or use it in the first place.

Case in point: I build custom computers for people for a living. Lots of them come to me with questions about builds suggested by AI. Often times the builds are terrible value, old parts, incompatible, or literal hallucinations of parts that don't exist but that the AI imagines might exist in the future based on current part numbers / naming schemes. It's atrocious. So an expert like me would never ask an AI to build a PC for them. But to the customer who doesn't know, the list looks awesome.

But in reality, it can only do their jobs really well because their jobs are bullshit. TLDR AI has achieved the exact opposite that the execs wanted it to by illuminating how useless, easy, and stupid their own jobs are because the AI can do them competently already, and their own incompetence in assuming that it can also replace all the lower level workers too since it can do c-suite jobs so well, without realizing that those lower jobs are how the company actually functions and require humans.

I'd argue that's using the tool badly. It doesn't help with the language styling it uses in answers, but putting that aside, what it's really good for us getting started in a subject matter. e.g. giving you a breakdown of component types you need you to put in (cpu, mobo, ram, psu, etc). I find it very good at quickly cutting through the crap online and giving me the brief introduction and terms I can start more thorough research on.

I've tried switching to Linux so many times. I get pissed off when something doesn't work, and you're expected to spend hours following 'help' videos, typing random sht into the command lines, which only ever works about 60% of the time. I love the idea of linux, but unless you actually want to learn all the command line gibberish, it's a fucking nightmare.

It's because AI is, at its core, pattern recognition. Most medical testing is a better version of WebMD, where a set of symptoms should fit into a series of patterns. Where the humans beat AI is when the pattern is slightly off, and the humans are generally more imaginative at alternate hypothesis, because the computer will always give the best/most likely match, because frequency comes into play.

You can talk to your computer like star trek,,and it can do some amazing stuff. Place i work was able to cut some tasks like company evals and what not from weeks to days by loading data into ai. One team shove ours and a customers data into ai asking for cost optimizations, and 80% of the things were actionable saving millions. It's like a really eager assistant. Have to double check its work.

At work, Glean searches across 30+ years of documentation finding accurate information buried in outdated and incomplete documents, compares all the info and determines what is likely to be the correct information, with summary and sources. It really cuts down on me having to ask others for tribal knowledge. Before Glean, I was blocked for 7 hours looking for an answer to my question. After Glean I had that answer in about 20 seconds>

Anyone who says it can't do anything useful better get ready for the layoff because they will be outmaneuvered by someone with their title who figured out how to leverage the capabilities that exist now. Some of the use cases in software development are killer apps, prototyping, code base search, creating documentation from code automatically. The frontier is continuing to grow too. Last year it was massively less capable than this year after MCP. Trend will continue.

My company is pushing chatgpt and having all kinds of meetings on how it's awesome and it's uses. Maybe ofr the sales or project side but I can't find any uses on the engineering side and we've had to clean up multiple messes from our tier 1 support who have tried using it to resolve issues and breaking things further.

None of it has that, its why its a bubble waiting so burst. Immense amounts of money ia being pumped into it, and so far it doesnt really deliver. When those investors start to demand some results, itll all go bottoms up.
Theres plenty of useful ai stuff, sure, but not at the scale that warrants so much money and resources.
So companies like microsoft are desperate to find a problem for their “solutions”.

I find it fairly useful as a programming aid. Not a programmer, fuck that, it's pretty much always wrong about specifics, tool use, operating environments, etc. But I just treat it as a big aggregator that keeps track of all my failed attempts and also occasionally finds a 12 year old stack exchange post that didn't use any of my keywords but answers my question perfectly.
Otherwise it can go to hell. No one needs image or video manipulation and blatant artist/writer/performer theft.

On image manipulation, I don't think anyone needs generated images, but AI image processing like DLSS and FSR are fantastic. DLSS is the only form of AI use that I wholeheartedly endorse because it breathes life into older systems and allows people to run games at quality settings they wouldn't normally be able to afford. That's not a bad thing. It's bad when the game runs so poorly that it requires DLSS to even function, but overall it's not bad to have an extra performance boosting feature.

Llm-Ai is definitely useful, but most of it gets advertised as the magic it isnt. And most of that is gained by the labor of others who go uncredited. That there is the problem

It’s useful for tedious stuff like “make a script that organizes this data into a spreadsheet”, or “reorganize this list and remove all the ____”. Stuff that would take a lot longer to do manually. Sometimes it’s good for troubleshooting scripts/issues with things. But yeah, I wouldn’t trust it to replace an entire worker. It’s a fucking tool. But as they replace more and more workers with these Ai things, the enshittification gets worse and worse. And what’s more, Ai needs a constant supply.

They're using predictive AI to predict protein shapes. Chatbot AIs also predict an output based on an input, so research into the latter can offer solutions to problems in the former. I'm not saying that pushing AI everywhere as hard as they're doing is a good thing, or that they're even helpful. But the research into making them better can help AI developers in other fields.
