A lot of people who think they've heard "good country" have actually heard bluegrass. Kinda like how people who think they've heard good disco actually heard funk.

Genre classification is hard though. Lots of people would say bluegrass is a subgenre of country, and then you'd also have trouble distinguishing "true country" from artists that sometimes dipped into roots rock like Tom Petty or the Eagles.
Then you have artists who might put a little country in their metal, like Between the Buried and Me. :)
