Maduro is a bastard- corrupt as they come- but Venezuela is an OPEC no less. The people have been struggling for years. I fear for the safety of my Abuela & mi Tia.
This US administration are working hard for a nobel prize. Invading foreign countries violating UN treats/rules for the sake of south american oil by force. INothing new here and they're not better than maduro. US is preparing the puppet to lead the country. The world is watching.
The United States of America is now an international terrorist organization. Just because the Republicans are in charge, doesn't mean the rest of us aren't complicit.
Enough that starting an unprovoked war of aggression against a neighbor in the same hemisphere was seen as an acceptable act to distract us from the fact that the sitting president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, absolutely raped A LOT of kids.
Right, the President of Peace, who renamed the Department of Defense to Department of War, just declared war on Venezuela and is bombing civilian infrastructure. I hope FIFA is proud of this.
He didn't declare war. He just straight up attacked and captured Maduro, allegedly. Even if Maduro may have been an illegitimate head of state, this is going a bit too far. Noriega annulled Panama's election results after it became clear he'd lost, and that gave Bush the pretext he needed to invade and capture him.
We don't have those same circumstances here with Venezuela. It's not a strong argument from Trump's position.
So Maduro's being kidnapped, flown to the US, then declared an illegal alien and deported to CECOT. Then Trump Inc. takes possession of Venezuela's Oil. Because Trump.
"A bit too far" is underselling it. He straight out went and bombed a foreign country for a fabricated reason, and allegedly kidnapped/killed/whatever their head of state (who was a dick, but still). That's not a mere "military operation", they literally invaded another country. They're just not calling it a war by that name, but it's what they're doing.
Right. And I'm pretty disgusted with all the Western news outlets refusing to put up headlines in big fat bold text "U.S. attacks Venezuela". Any self-respecting news journalism outlet would have done that from the outset.
You have AP as well (they didn't use "attacks" literally but "strikes", which is pretty much the same). Plus, this seems to be happening right now, so maybe there needs to be some time for other media to catch up.
They had no large text on front page about the initial strikes, but now they have large text on the front page about Maduro's capture by the U.S. military.
This morning's actions appear to be specifically to capture Maduro. I would imagine the strikes against infrastructure and/or military are to enable that.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's more like a kidnap, with Maduro buying his freedom from Droopy Don. Or maybe they'll give him a position in the White House.
Hi from Caracas. Of course they're trying to topple the regime. We're hoping that it falls with the as few innocent victims possible, but so many are dying already from malnourishment, lack of medical care, crime and repression that it's hard to gauge the lesser of the two evils.
They've abducted the president and his wife. They're not trying to topple the regime, they're forcibly replacing it. Do you really want the US to decide and control what comes next? Because they're not out for your well-being, they're out for your oil, just like the campaigns in the Middle East.
We have a legitimate president elect already and it's not maduro - there was an election in June and the govt stole it. As for the oil, the US has been the prime buyer of Vz oil since the 1920s. Can you name an instance of the US actually _stealing_ foreign oil?
It won't be a saviour. They'll just install another strongman to suck your resources dry. Not a thing will be don't for the people. If the regime falls don't trust the Americans or allow them to rule you.
Regime change, you will get a regime that cares for you as little as the old regime, out with old bad, in with the new bad, or knowing Trump it may be even worse!
We've had a president elect since June; old bad stole the election. He's actually a stand-in for a very well known opposition politician that was banned.
Regime change was always your business, as Venezuelans. It was never our business as Americans, and you certainly don’t want whoever our fascist government wants to install in Maduro’s place. I hope you make it through this.
Mate people are starving to death and dying from lack of medical care in the US right now. Trust me we are not there to help you. We are there to steal what little you do have and leave you with nothing.
So many in the US are also dying from malnourishment, lack of medical care, crime and repression... One tyrant hitting another isnt great for either of us. :< You'll get some new dictator who's 'friendly' to ours.
I have no doubt you want to get rid of Maduro. But considering the guy who wants to remove him, I wouldn't expect much of an improvement. Beause what's most likely to happen is a far-right authoritarian puppet regime, that sells of your country's future to American corporations. As for affordable food, medical care, and violent crime... the US isn't even capable of solving those problems at home.
We have a president elect. who's actually a stand-in for the foremost opposition politician and Nobel winner because she was banned from running. The govt made up their own numbers but there's literal receipts:
I get that you'd like regime change, for all the terrible reasons you've mentioned, but I honestly doubt that acquiring it via military action from another state (particularly the US) is the lesser of any evils - and it's also a terrible precedent on a world-wide scale.
I think you're correct - I also think the Trump regime wants to incite rebellions at home as well, to give themselves the excuse for declaring martial law/national emergency/whatever convenience. They're probably disappointed that it hasn't worked so far with ICE, or deploying National Guard, or any of the many other truly awful things they've done.
Bruh, Panama is one of the most economically unequal countries on the planet. The money goes into the canal region and the rural areas (which America carved out from Columbia) are basically just left to rot.
Also calling warcrimes "harassment" feels like an extremely weird euphemism. The US is bombing fishing boats, dude. Innocent people are dying and you're going out into public to celebrate and talk about why it's a lesser of two evils, as if the US isn't the reason most this shit happened...
I happen to be a Panamanian citizen and though I don't live there (migrated here as a small kid) I know it well. Panama has poverty but it's not more unequal than Vz, where armored SUVs drive past hospitals without antibiotics.
The explosions and flights stopped about 2 hours ago. One military base that was struck had apartment buildings in it, and they evacuated. It will take a while to know if any were hurt, but it wasn't the mass bombing you're probably thinking of.
whelp, have fun being occupied by american troops for the next 20years until we suddenly withdraw leaving a power vacuum and extremists take control of everything and make things even worse i guess?
"Would you rather we let people die?!" (or somesuch bullshit excuse) is how laws get bent and then broken. It's stupid, especially when his party controls all branches of the government: they could change the laws.

We did it to Noriega in Panama after he illegally annulled the results of an election there. That basically gave Bush the pretext to invade.
Here, with Venezuela, the election is long, long past. This was just bluster and an attempt to distract. As far as I'm concerned, Trump is desperate.
