They are way smarter with those than my dog is. He just pushes it along until it hits something, the whole time barking brainlessly. e

I guess I better to talk to my spouse about the dog peeing and shitting wherever it goes, not to mention the licking and sniffing others

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Yeah, that's most definitely a chat to have, because dogs that are treated and trained well don't do that. You both need to step up.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Yeah that sounds like a chat you need to have.

I want to be that level of playful again

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That is a very small fence, you could easily reach in there to pet those.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is why they choose the bear. They are so goddamn cute.

I think my brain is broken because my first thought was "are polar bear eggs really red?"

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I must be higher than I thought, I went "I hope it doesn't confuse the polar bears so they think they are their eggs" then facepalm

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fun fact - a polar bear’s skin is black, and its hair is colourless

I was gonna say whatever company makes these should use this as an advertisement. That adult polar bear (is big anyways) was actively trying to squish it and couldn't.

They are to keep people out, not bears in. Just need a bare minimum to count towards intent, to avoid civil liability lawsuit payouts.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I mean you would think not containing the 1500 lbs. apex land predator on your property would also open you up to liability but what do I know IANAL.

It is a little disconcerting that one of its first instincts is to bounce on it to crush it (open).

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man I almost thought you were joking for a second there

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So crazy that a fuckin wolverine killed one

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If it's brown just lay down, if it's black try to fight back, if it's white say goodnight

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

If you are in polar bear country, you need a vehicle and two guns. The first gun needs to be something big, like a .308 minimum- But more likely, ten gauge slug. It needs to have enough punch to go through the bear's skull, which is a hefty task. The other gun needs to be much smaller, preferably something like a snub nose revolver or something. Don't worry about carrying lots of ammo for this one- You only need one round.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I'm only half joking. If the bear gets on top of you, the best option might legitimately be to shoot yourself in the head. Polar bears will not waste time killing you, they will eat you alive, and they do not start at the head. You are dead either way, you are simply selecting to suffer less.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Having actually lived in polar bear country, I've mostly just used my 44mag. The PB in the Svalbard museum was shot with a .50 - a ridiculously large cartridge 😅 That bullet went through the neck, made mush of its intestines and exploded the femur. Still ran 50m before it fell over... Rifles we usually have 30-06, but 308 works just as well.
You don't aim for the head of the PB though. Heart/lung is best. Also, always carry flare gun with explosive shells. 95% of the time it'll scare them away

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Taking notes for the. 00003% chance I end up in.. checks notes "PB territory."

I think a butcher did that for him. This polar bear lives in the Copenhagen Zoo and gets a cow's head once in a while as enrichment / toy / snack. More photos here: /gallery/polar-bear-copenhagen-zoo-gets-cow-head-about-once-week-WSl5M

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Ah. Well. I mean, I wasn't going to eat it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think they're the worst bears to encounter as they will hunt you down practically 100% of the time.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If not friend why friend shaped?

2 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

I'll never understand this joke. Bear shape is the opposite of friend shape. Bears are not your friend.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Exactly my thoughts. I’d pet them and I think they’d appreciate it seeing as everyone gives them such a wide berth.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Would they give me a Klondike bar?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they would! In the same way anyone appreciates fast food arriving they didn't have to pay for

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yes! I’m always super happy about unexpected food

"What if a rhino was a carnivore?"

2 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

Imagine you’re walking through the woods and you see a moose in a thicket of trees up ahead. You stare at him, and he just stares right back. And that's when the attack comes. Not from the front, but from the side, and the other two moose you didn't even know were there. Because moosen are pack hunters. And he slashes at you with this... a six-foot scythe of antlers, like a brace of spears on its head…the point is you are alive when they start to eat you.

Why do I recognize this premise? Jurassic Park?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep. Kid at the dig site thought a raptor wasn't scary because "it looks like a giant turkey". Grant gave the above speech to correct his mistake.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Moose are very territorial. I've had to deal with many bears and only a few moose and I can honestly say moose are much more terrifying.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

NOTE: Not talking about polar bears, fuck that.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So yeah, we parked this freight train of muscle on top of stilts so it can run at 30mph through 4 feet of snow or water, and gave it a crown of swords for the lulz. Oh and it's always angry.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The first time my wife and I tried wilderness camping we ended up in a cute little meadow with a little hill, only to wake up to no moon or stars, so dark you can't see your hand in front of you face, only to hear (and feel) a male moose in rut. Stamping at the ground feet away from our tent and moaning. We scared him off with a "bear banger" noise maker, but he stayed within a few hundred feet grunting for hours as we lay in our sleeping bags, about 3km hike from cell service. Very scary.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That sounds terrifying. Glad you made it out okay. I love the way moose look, but they sound pretty mean. But I suppose some people would say that about me.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

!! this was just the basis of a long “would you rather” conversation among my friends at a remote cabin in Colorado! “Which would you rather encounter in the wild - Moose vs. black bear, moose vs. grizzly, grizzly vs. Tiger shark, tiger shark vs. crocodile” consensus was - black bear over moose, moose over grizzly :if: there are climbable trees or craggy rocks to hide among, tiger shark over grizzly, croc vs shark was a tie

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is why the indigenous peoples invented Wendigos. To act as guardian spirits, to fend away the merciless meese. Then came the orcanians.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

I'm going to need an actual indigenous person to comment, not just some random walrus. I am not aware of any of your credentials.

Who would win in a fight? Two polar bears, or Mike Ditka?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man, those fences always freak me out when I see footage from this place (or at least where I think this is). Spectacularly inadequate for actually containing those animals. But whatever they're doing seems to be working. Still, polar bears can be hella mercurial.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Where is this place?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 electrified wires on the bottom & 3 at the top, 2 meters tall, they dont have a big vertical leap and those wires will deter anything curious testing of the 2nd fence

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Testing the fences? Clever girl.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, unless it's gonna kill them outright or do permanent nerve damage I wouldn't be super confident that electricity would reliably keep an angry polar bear in. Electric fences won't reliably stop a bull that really wants out, and polar bears are way more likely to fuck around with the fence and try to thwart it. Plus, they can't jump super well but you'd be surprised how well they can dig, and they're smart enough to figure out how to down the fence posts without getting zapped, etc.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The fences they use typically run about 7500v. For reference, takes about 100-250 to kill a human.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No? Volts are not the thing that kill u. Its the amps thats lethal. U can touch a 10kvolt electrified fence just fine for example

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Good for you. Guidelines for electric fences for bear enclosures are measured in volts, and state a minimum of 5000 are needed for bears. And when searching about amount of electricity to kill both humans or bears, it comes up in volts.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
