"Did you read that on the internet? Let's just let the real doctors decide"

Lesson learned. They probably got a chuckle out of it.

It happened to me once. The doctor was very insistent in me "making and effort" to see from my right eye which is a prosthetic. Dumbass

Checking lung sounds one day. " i think diminished on the left side".. pt- " Well i would think so, Considering that one is gone"

This is gold!

Came to post the same thing. Second day in clinical :/

A friend works in care was once getting one of the clients dressed after showering, spent 20 minutes looking for their socks

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and shoes only to realise the bloke had no legs.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea... I’m 6 years in and I still do that on occasion.

keep your cool and respond: "well, in this case i'll mark down 'no pulse'"

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha we've all done that! Just don't document 2+ pedal pulses! At least you didn't ask them to stand/pivot. Welcome to the madness!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm surprised you're even wasting your time with assessments...aren't y'all supposed to be playing cards all the time?!? (/s)

My mom was bilateral amputee. Student nurse wants to weigh after she asks how tall are you. Wonder if she s a nurse

Congratulation of finishing Nursing school! baptism by fire with the pandemic, stay safe and keep learning!

Make sure to adjust their BMI.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well if you have to put down their height in your report, be sure to subtract two feet

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was his name Lt. Dan?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Proceed to check, then say “Excellent, no pulse! Exactly what I expected.”

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

"Just checking your memory" *nervous chuckle*

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, you haven't got a leg to stand on in that case. Talk about putting your foot in your mouth.

6 years ago | Likes 694 Dislikes 1

Someone should give her a leg up.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Careful now, put yourself in their shoes. You can't afford to step on too many toes.

6 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 0

I just wish for any in this proffession to break a leg!

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Blow them off their feet

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And stand tall doing it!

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

@OP is a new nurse, I think they’re doing a stand up job!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You’ll get badass patients who make jokes about their amputations soon enough! Congrats on being a new nurse!

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Happens to everyone....wait until you have to take a BP on a patient with no arms?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They...have legs, right? You can put a BP cuff on a calf.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The neck can also be used.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ahhh. Like when I asked a patient with no legs if they can walk to the exam room. Oof.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Details details.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wait until you read someone else’s assessment that says their pedal pulses are strong...

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

All. The. Time.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel ya.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Still gotta check popliteal or femoral tho to do a proper assessment. Also, nurse you got report from should have told you about pts legs...

6 years ago | Likes 283 Dislikes 1

No legs means no popliteal....and yes, report should have included amputations. Lol

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sometimes people say “no legs” but it’s actually bilat bka, in which case you’d check pop. But f/u sounds like amp is at thigh so yah no pop

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The patient literally had no legs from the waist down

6 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

LIEUTENANT DAN

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Femoral pulses then ;) Good luck building your flow! It gets easier I promise!

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think you just wanted people to know that you know the word "popliteal"

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You’re welcome to think whatever you please

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If a patient has good pedal pulses they likely have good fem and pop segments

6 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 1

You’re right, but in the meme above that I was replying to pt states has no legs...if bka do pop and if aka fem-that’s all I was meaning ;)

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ah gotcha! Fair point haha

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

:)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What if a patient has zero pedal pulses?

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Some are hard to find. If they have feet.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Check for legs.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Please learn this (so many newer medical folks mistake) “extremity “ = hand or foot. “limb” = arm or leg.

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 4

When soeaking to a patient, say arm/leg/hand/foot, etc.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a paramedic, actually, no. Extremity=the furthest point from the core (technically the heart), but it's most often the hand/foot.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Also, iirc "leg" refers to the part of the lower limb between the knee and ankle joints, while "limb" refers to the entire limb.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Usually includes the foot, too

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The upper section, is that just refered to as thigh or upper leg?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thigh
