Game of Thrones

Thanks. Is it worth watching?

It is a fantasy series with focus on powerstruggles between compelling characters, realms and organizations, that does not shy from violence, sex or profanities, and where fantastical elements has a small though growing role. I trust you can tell if that sounds like something for you; for long it was one of the most popular shows out there. Yet to be wholly honest I note the public found the last few seasons fell in writing quality, and the last left most - though not all - unsatisfied.

To my recollection the writing dipped because the creators were (a) free-styling it because they were ahead of George RR Martin (the original author of the books) and (b) because their focus shifted to a writing a new Star Wars script, which didn’t end up going anywhere.

No cure, but plenty of solutions, if someone is willing.

Bronn really was the best character in the series. Always called it like he saw it. Consistent personality and motivations throughout. Consistently made smart decisions. Not a benevolent or malevolent character. Just consistently shrewd and opportunistic

He's also a funny lad :)

hot take: I watched the entire series earlier last year for the first time and didn't like the show from the start. I also had every death spoiled by people I know or just by being on the internet. If you are in the same circumstance, the show turns into a very long, violent, incestuous, shock jock type of drivel. I'm actually surprised I made it through the whole thing. People kept telling me, oh it gets better. It really didn't. I also tried the books, which had the same issues.

People kept telling you the show that is famous for crashing down in quality would get better? I suspect you've been had.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Shitty people, being shitty to each other with snow zombies and dragons.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I never tried the show because some people I know who managed to get through it all in the book were like they made it even more violent and rapey than the books. And I was like you know what? I'm good!

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yup. Same thing happened to me. The Witcher novels were recommended to me. I've played the games and by that time I had seen the first couple seasons of the Netflix show.
To say I was surprised at how violent and rapey the books were would be an understatement. By the end of the series, every single female character was either murdered, tortured, maimed, disfigured by a man, and/or raped repeatedly (and I do mean ALL of the female characters).

I'm sure Martin is a good writer, I just dont think he's a very good fantasy writer

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the books, Martin front loads his exposition. I don't need 3 paragraphs of family backstory and descriptions of the clothing the characters wear each time a new character is introduced.

He needs to cut the fat and remember Chekov's gun. The theme here is: if it's not relevant, take it out. Otherwise you'll wind up with a big book that says absolutely fuck all about anything.

I love the unintended ambivalence of two of the swords names in combination with German.

Joffrey's first sword he named lions tooth. In the german translation "Löwenzahn". Wich is not just the fierce lions tooth, but also the very much unfierce dandellion.

Stannis's sword is called Lightbringer. Which sounds basically exactly the same (just the r is different) as Leidbringer, which would mean "bringer of suffering".

I think that unintentionally reflects perfectly on what the names intend >

Idk man, dandelions will grow through concrete in a drought. That is pretty fierce.

This.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

to invoke vs. reality.

1 year ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Lightbringer is also the literal translation of Lucifer.

1 year ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 3

Also true.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Lightbringer/Morning Star is the Planet Venus when it is visible for 263 days preceding the dawning of the sun, then for 263 days it is the Evening Star where it follows the sunset.

And while it is a term that is linked in the bible to Lucifer, it is also linked to Jesus, Rev 22:16. Just like how Satan is a title (adversary/opponent/accuser), Lucifer/Lightbringer/Morning Star is, too.

Yup, its a pretty standard fiction trope/device.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

I don't think that was on purpose.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The books weren't written originally in German, so I doubt it was planned

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Dandelions = dents de lions. French for lion's teeth.

If you name a sword, you fight with your trouble. Not so good, to fight with a named sword. Again

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

What if it helps you to work through stuff? Then you can 'hang it in the willows' when you're healed. (Dutch expression).

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless that sword is The Throngler. Ain't nobody fuck with The Throngler
