My platoon sergeant made this mandatory for us so we could get an idea for how close incoming fire was. The range we used had a trench running behind the target line so we weren’t in any danger, looks like these guys have something similar.
This is mandatory for any German soldier going on a tour of duty. Infantry School Hammelburg provides this as course to locate snipers. There is also a battlefield impressions course while sitting in a beton trench with 8kg TNT blowing up 25 meters away.
