It reminds me of Rikki Tikki Tavi.

Can you just leave them alone now?

Uncle had one build a nest in his frontyard years back, near enough the house that anyone walking in or parking Mom would pop out and do the whole 'broken wing' bit. I know he mowed around it but I'm fairly sure the eggs got taken, momma bird was a little too new and dropping eggs in the middle of a trimmed yard with zero cover probably didn't work out great.

Sigh. Dunno if you're rage baiting or actually weapons grade stupid.
Awlyah
Yes, your home used to be their home. Killdeer are ground nesting birds. Always have been. Perhaps not think about how dumb they are, but reflect your impact on the environment around you. You might learn a thing or 2

Our plovers reminding us they carry concealed weapons.

When I was like 7 or 8 I was walking through dirt fields to get to school one day when I saw a mother killdeer doing this distraction display. I fixated on it as I was walking and all of the sudden heard a big "crunch.." I stepped on her babies and murdered them all. immediately started crying and ran home to tell my mom. Always thought that she felt like I did it on purpose and then got upstairs based on her reaction.

You didn't mean to. Don't carry that further. Similar happened to me and will always slightly blame myself over it.

The very fact that you reacted as you did proved that you've got goodness within. A sad moment for sure but you've brightened the world by just being you.

More like "faking a wound"
FiftyShadesOfTiramisu
Yeah, that's a mistranslation. Haciéndose means getting, but I've also seen it in the sense of acting or pretending. E.g., haciéndose el loco = playing dumb.
