I was convinced that I could work my way up the corporate ladder and fight the system from the inside. This is not true. We know what the problem is we allowed too many people to turn away from big problems and hope someone else would stand up for what’s right. It’s only human to avoid expending energy on conflict. I think it’s also making us really unwell, physically and mentally to feel like we can’t do anything. It feels amazing to try though.

#1 I'm visiting my folks right now. My dad said that there isn't a scientific consensus on climate change, which I pointed out is simply not true. He then said, less than two minutes later, that there's nothing that we can do about climate change and what we REALLY need to be concerned about is a solar flare. I pointed out that he seems to have completely changed his mind off climate change within this conversation and he immediately changed the topic.

My loose understanding is that if a big solar flare occurred, we would have ample warning, and COULD disconnect sections of the power grid to minimize damage. Question is, would power companies do it in time, when faced with "but what of profits from shutting down too soon?"

Also don't forget the liability aspect. Solar flare falls under the act of god clauses, shutting down and they will violate service agreements and be held liable. Better to let it crash and figure out how to benefit from it.

They know when a big storm is coming now, they have days or a week's notice, and yet can't keep the small things from breaking I don't trust they can handle the bigger stuff like a solar flare, besides they know the govt will bail em out and who dies, dies. Why would they care?

I used to think climate change was going to result in the collapse of civilization and an 8 billion person earth would end up a 200,000 person earth mostly subsisting. But recent reports of the "feedback loops" that are starting to happen and are predicted to happen, I'm beginning to worry that an actual STERILE earth like Venus is a real possibility.

You might be right. Think about it. Previous extinction events happened because of sudden (over thousands of years) climate change events, and those only happened with greenhouse gasses NEAR the planets surface. Stuff like ocean currents changing and some extra CO2 getting 'suddenly' released from previously frozen tundras and the like. And now....... now we're DIGGING UP massive, absolutely Massive amounts of GHGs and shoving it into the atmosphere.

(2) These GHGs weren't near the surface before, and thus not part of the cycle. It's just a recipe for absolute disaster. Still, I actually do think it's almost impossible to wipe out 100% of life, since there's so much living kilometers under the surface, feeding on the earth's warm insides. Not a good consolidation prize though.

OK, but this is Earth as a whole. There's nowhere to move. We haven't yet put a person on Mars, so any dream of colonizing it is at least fifty years from being even REMOTELY possible (and relying on a LOT of optimistic best-case scenarios). And that's talking simple habitats; terraforming a planet is centuries beyond us, even with the (relatively) favorable starting conditions Mars presents. The powers that be aren't going anywhere that will save them.

Honestly? No, this is still the orange. The most annoying part is how the same people who used to not only mockingly laugh while declaring, "climate change isn't real!" are now saying, "of course climate change is real - but it's NOT man-made!" with the same confidence and snide dismissals. Kurz has been heavily criticized for their 'unrealistically optimistic' takes on climate change. They're not well liked in environmental circles simply because their takes aren't realistic. If climate change basically "is" going to cause a lot of suffering already, you don't go out and say "it's fine we just need to...". That's not only dishonest, but it makes people believe there's still time, thus falling back into old habits instead of realizing we need to change EVERYTHING right the F now.

Understandable. I believe optimism though is something humans have been lacking. Regardless of if their takes are overly optimistic, I think it is just as harmful (if not more) to decide "We are all going to die, so what's the point of even trying?" And my interpretation is that Kurtz' take is not that EVERYTHING will be fine; they even say as much. Things are indeed bad and to the point where we will not be able to stop many catastrophes that are headed our way. Gotta save who we can though.
