Packing in your own food is for suckas. Just do what I do; Eat the people on the trails.

Or rob people of their food.
ratmagic
Is this deyhdrating or freeze dry?
szechaunfiend
Bro you are going to be so dehydrated
RomeoWhereShartThou
You probably shouldn't backpack if you're dehydrated, just sayin'...
FourFiveFire
And you only get more dehydrated by eating dehydrated food.
notagainwiththenames
Can I come backpacking with you!?

This is the only "Ghee" that I trust:

Kind of need to see a good shot of the result once rehydrated, @op. The initial gif doesn't really show much =(

I know im late to the party, but recipes would be amazing. Hiking food is soooo expensive..
michaelpaice2
An easier way to make ghee is to drop the butter into hot water so it melts. Chill and lift off the fat layer. Ghee.

Nobody talking about the huge amount of plastic being used, probably once?
BringingRationalityBack
when the alternative is exactly as much waste at twice the cost for a commercial meal, no, there's no need to talk about it.
theobituator
Maybe to appreciate nature we can pollute less, as well...or is that not why we go hiking?
kamonAUD
Bless you.

+1 for someone making your own ghee. love the way it makes the house smell.
CoqRoq
Clever idea since backpacking meals are expensive. How much water do you add to rehydrate?

Depends on how badly you need to pee

manolyk23
It’s sterile in the bladder but by the time it comes out it’s been contaminated. We have bacteria in our urethra!

That why I bypass my urethra altogether.

How do you dehydrate soup? What's the shelf life?
IamJustinSane
Ever seen a Lipton cup-a-soup? That’s dehydrated soup.
Nightcaste
Yes, but *how*?
Cheomesh
"Portable soup" goes way back centuries. Also, bullion is dehydrated soup.
Nyoibo83
Pocket soup, it's got a very long shelf life, but you have to make sure you get all the fat out of it before dehydrating
muleshoeTX
Yeah Lewis and Clark had portable soup if I remember right, and lots of it.
stealthgunner385
They also had Dr. Rush's Thunder Clappers.

OhBrantley
you can spend the money on a proper food dehydrator but an oven set to 100-120 F works too, cooking times differ depending on the food
TehStoner
Not all ovens go that low. Most bottom out at about 250
Kingpoopdik
Toaster ovens like to 40 bucks

Ok, good luck doing an entire camping trip in a toaster oven.

A food dehydrator?
z3lfmoord
A dehydrator or a freeze dryer?
oneoldman
Freeze dryers are much more efficient, expensive, and large. Also damage texture of food solids more.
z3lfmoord
Food solids such as? Because freeze drying is in fact THE best way to preserve food texture.
Shirleybananas88
And how exactly do you dehydrate soup?
GuybrushTW
Asking the right questions!
nonCanadianGoose
Pour out in a sheet pan or similar to under an inch deep. Set in oven at lowest setting with the door ajar. Stir every hour til flaky
stalecereal
My dehydrator has “fruit leather” trays that are solid and just sit on top on the screen tray
Nearlyburly
Right. Like the brand/model.
circlebreaker
@coreysfoodpics Any tips on a good made &/or model?
nonCanadianGoose
For soup, household models aren’t good. An oven, set on lowest settings & the door cracked is how I do it. Pour it in a sheet pan

Excalibur dehydrators rock. Have seen amazing diy solar dehydrator too if you're crafty and broke.

He's got big rectangular trays, which means there aren't too many options (check Amazon). That said, you can get the same thing with a 1/

much cheaper option. I use this one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Nesco-Professional-600W-5-Tray-Food-Dehydrator-FD-75PR/10982697 2/

and it works great for me. I don't have a fancy way to seal my meals up, though; I just use ziplock bags and they still last for months.

I've had great results with two air conditioner filters tied to a box fan (veggies between the filters and run over night.
