Interesting that you could see how much more insulation the wood provides compared to the metal clamp of the drill, because it got red quite a bit earlier under identical conditions.

After seeing a lot of hateful and well... dumb comments. I looked it up and this is just a simple easy to understand example of how friction welding works. Actual friction welding forms a stronger joined bond and allows two materials that wouldn't otherwise be possible to be welded.

You know what, it probably does. I've seen people removing ancient bolts by welding a bar to them. Much faster with a welding machine than trying to do friction welding, though.

For me, i thought "Hey cool, maybe I'll need to friction weld something one day, and i may be able to transfer some sort of knowledge!" Then about a third of the way through you realize there will be no point in real life that you would ever use this technique, but you've already invested this much time, so whatever. Then you sadly come to the realization that it's a gif that ends too soon, and you didn't even get the satisfaction of a finished product out of the entire ordeal.

Probably 52100 high carbon steel or 440C stainless, both at high hardness.

I wonder if you could use it as a technique to be able to remove a screw that had it's slot reamed out and you couldn't unscrew it the "normal" way. Heck of a lot of work for that, but it might be useful in edge cases.

Assuming it’s in wood, you’re better off just drilling it out at that point. For bonus points you can use a left-handed drill bit and it might even back out on its own.

Just use an extractor bit, they're specifically made to remove stuck screws and bolts.

Cut the head off the stuck screw, tighten the drill chuck around the now headless shanks and reverse the screw

that only works if the stuck screw isn't flush with the surface of the material. Admittedly doing this kind of friction weld onto a screw that is still fully into the wood is probably going to really mess up the piece of wood too.
