I’ll never forget the guy wearing a baby onesie on his face. Didn’t get a picture, but the little arm fabric flapping on the side of his head was hilarious.

My favorite is the sponge
thespaceghetto
Best one I saw was a paper towel tied to the face just like this but with an iphone cord
TheSpindrifter
The car air filter was genius, and the inflatable space suits would work if the air intake had a HRPA filter.
Nanntuckett
I was a cashier for all of the pandemic. We saw some shit…
DropDrop
2020 forced America to take an IQ test... we didn't do great. then in 2024 we took it again, and elected the guy who in 2020 was suggesting we inject bleach or UV light into the body... so yeah, no improvement from 2020.
Hoiloidl
Some might say the US already failed that IQ test in 2016 though
icantbelieveistillhavetoprotestthiscrap
I had an old school gas mask I wore around. I was excited to have the excuse.
imgurmage
There was a guy in my town walking around in one of those plague doctor masks with the beak for the first couple months before everyone got those 3-ply masks. I talked to him for a bit and he was mostly just excited to finally have an excuse to wear it.
Anfalicious
In Melbourne? My friend did this and had the exact same reaction
FestusMA
That’s metal. I applaud him.
Dracongield
I made one just for it. Modified it a bit so it would not fog up my glasses. I was a local cryptid for covid.
Junktrunkjunkie
I loved wearing the masks... When people can't see my face I almost feel like a normal person in public
Rocketpocketpants
Where I live people still wear masks. I do when I'm feeling under the weather as well. I love seeing it and love not getting harassed for doing it. I lived somewhere else where people would get angry at me for wearing them (this was before COVID though) but the reactions actually made me feel unsafe to the point that I stopped wearing them. I'm glad to be out of that red state, people got violently angry at things that my autistic ass thought were innocuous.
PlanckEraWasMyBestEra
Yeah I still see them around here occasionally and I always feel a kinship with the people I see in them. I wear them too when I'm sick. And I'm even in a red state! In a blue area though (Salt Lake, Utah)
OldSchoolNewRules
How dare you hold out on me. Remove that mask and give me your communicable disease this instant!
PassiveCommenter
I was one of the people at the door who would tell people if their mask was valid. Had a guy come in with a black wedding veil on his head ask me 'what's the difference between what I'm wearing and what he's wearing.' I'm wearing two masks, one n95. He called me and idiot. And stormed out because I said fish net wasn't gonna cut it.

There's no need to shamenthis person...unless that's what they want, and in that case they've been very bad
PocketCleric
Probably the most protected. Impermeable layer, gas filter mask (if cartridged). As long as she washes it when she gets home

The Year 2020 was the democratization of the BDSM Society

As yes, where the moto was "WHAT? IT'S A MASK!"

Drunpus first term. When he messed up the masks delivery. Let’s see what he has in stock this time. We already have measles and recession of the Turd Reich.

LokisSenseOfMischief
In late 2020, I was on a train going to Trier. this guy 2 seats away from me was double masked while also wearing a face shield and splash goggles with kitchen gloves. Every 15 minutes, he basically emptied an entire bottle of hand sanitizer over himself and the aisle way in between us. I don't know how he could breath with the fumes.

I'm glad we have cameras

I missed all this. I was at sea radio silent on a submarine. I remember thinking that this COVID thing would all be over by the time we get back as we got underway in March 2020.
spiritplumber
you still win at lockdown
rozzyL
I still keep two masks in the car and one in my back pack just incase I feel I need to wear them.
TorSverre
The amount of stupidity over there will never cease to amaze me.
nddstgm9gz12
I don’t think these are meant to be actual masks, I’d guess that these were before the mask mandates were in place and some of these people were scared to shop.
Ekibwurm
some of these scream of stupid... some of them have actual thinking behind them (but poorly executed) with whatever was available to them..
iLoveItWhenMyFingersSmellLikePussy
I like the guy with the car air filter on his head lpl
Ekibwurm
very steampunk style XD

I'm guilty of wearing a...what the fuck is it called, im drawing a blank, a painter's gas mask?? Wore it to the grocery store early on before I got a proper mask. It was all black and I wore it with a black hoodie with a Venom logo from marvel on it so I looked like the lamest raver in the peanut butter aisle.
onlyhalfghost
it's a filter mask. Reasonable effort, I suppose.
nurmich
I would bet good money that #2 is just a petulant asshole who wore that because he was being forced to have something over his mouth but knew it wouldn't do anything. But my opinion of people allows for very little generosity when interpreting intent these days.
Draygen
My mom swore that wearing a cotton mask for more than 5 minutes would cause a person to get light headed and pass out. I ran for 12 miles wearing one. She said it was a fluke. Like, cognitive dissonance of "I'm right at all costs."
mohavewolfpup
Bonus for “we have a mask here you can wear” “uhh, no… do I look like a doctor?! Get that freedum cage away from muh face!”
onlyhalfghost
I was literally called an evil person and a demon for silently offering one to someone who entered my store without one, during lockdown 2
Ekibwurm
oh nonono i think you're spot on for this one too... he's got the '0 effort' tag stamped all over.
DustinJL
I bet he has that wrist brace on because he jerked it to Trump a few too many times.
Apeofdeath
Only one of these had any possibility of working
Dpatgotbanned
All of them would reduce droplets flying around with varying degrees of effectiveness. Again, my mask was there to protect you from me and vice versa. That being said, these pictures are an indication of a lack of education regarding masks.
Ekibwurm
scuba gear right? since you carry your own oxigen tank and you remove the air you've breath out of the system. wont cover others but you should be isolated enough.
QuartzPoker
That one would protect you, but the exhalations still go out into the world, putting others at risk if you are a carrier. That's why the N95s used in wood working with the little exhaust valve were often banned - the exhalations need to be filtered too.
Ekibwurm
yea i know its not a perfect system.... but seemed to be the closest out of those proposed here... like that huge circle filter (a car's maybe?) in the one before the scuba gear... cool for a steampunk cosplay... pretty sure it's fully innefective tho
Cuppyycaakes
This is all America, isn't it? •͡˘㇁•͡˘;;;
TacticoolWolf
I wore a costume space helmet one day when buying groceries. I figured it would at least be a sneeze guard, and the air passage was by the ears, so it could essentially buy me a little time. just like a wet rag in a fire, you do the best you can but you also need to eat.
BrentonCoppick
Where Im from I have not seen anyone wear anything Low IQ or hugely stupid let alone near those versions
warpfactor1
#1 when you buy a galactus helmet from wish.com

I got to witness a mother take her panties off and put them on her face, will she went to the ladies room and came out with them on so some assumptions had to be made.

That was the peak!

The dumbest ones were not wearing masks cause of freedumb
nddstgm9gz12
How do you know that the photos weren’t taken in March, before the surgeon general started recommending masks?
PoggersM
It's interesting how many of them don't use gloves.
rain67
Covid is an airborne virus. It's a bit more difficult to get Covid from a contaminated surface, but the risk isn't zero. It's harder to catch on porous surfaces.
PoggersM
True, but it's more like 60% vs 40% and not 90% vs 10%. If you touch a contaminated surface (such a persons hand) it can get in your system if you then touch your eyes/nose/mouth (which we do subconsciously all the time).

Neednoggle
Y'know what they've all got in common though? All these folks made do with what they had and thought might work to protect themselves and others, instead of having a complete fucking meltdown because of the smallest inconvenience in human history.
ImHereToGetDownvotes
I'd argue that #2 isn't in that list and is probably one of those "I have something over my head so it counts!" assholes after being told "You have to have a mask on"
TheOldSchoolisBack
#5 I mean, c’mon. You gotta admit those are pretty cool.
TheSpindrifter
I hacked together something like that, powered by my old CPAP Machine and a home-made "space helmet", powerd by a 18v Ryobi battery inverter. I had continuously filered air at positive pressure filling the helmet, but it was LOUD inside, and I felt like an ant under a magnifying glass wearing it from the parking lot in the blazing west Texass sun. I'm honestly surprised that no one took pictures of me.
ImHereToGetDownvotes
Funny enough, they're probably the worst ones for themselves. They literally pull air into themselves to inflate like that meaning they're sucking the germs right up into an enclosed space.
