Someone just peed in that hot tub, and it's even odds on who.

The reason I don't want fam to bring a dog is that I will devote every minute of my life to it. It's happened before, several times.

My dad loves animals but only playing with and pampering them. He wasn’t a great father so I never expected him to be a good pet owner though. He did a good job babysitting my cat though when I used to be traveling so I’m grateful for that. And when our pets have died are some of the few times I have seen him cry so I’m glad he is able to form emotional attachments with animals since my mom will never be able to do that.

And this is why. Are you happy now?

As a dad. I can't be trusted to show restraint. Yay another cat!! A chicken, no problem. A wee puppy, it's sleeping on my side. However if I say no, it's to protect the other animals

He knows that an enormous emotional bond will occur and dogs have a relatively short life span.

yup, and that all of the people who want the dog aren't going to do any of the work required to take care of the dog and he's not looking to take on more work and responsibility right now even though he absolutely loves dogs. I had dogs growing up so I knew this when I told my kids I didn't want a dog, but I also knew how much I loved having a dog as a kid so I got them a dog when I was ready to take on that responsibility.

The only thing worse than losing a pet is living without them at all.

It’s why I don’t adopt rats.

Which is exactly the reason I did't want a dog... https://imgur.com/iXAwm3p

Every family "Dad dad dad... lets get a dog, we will train it, and walk it and play with it and feet it and brush it!"

Every dad "no you won't I will have to" Every family "nuhhh uhhh please please please(x a million)"

Every dad "Fine" (one week later) "WALK YOUR DOG!" Family "I did it the other day, its not my turn!" "NO! He poops, its yucky" "Can't you walk him" (Family) "Gee dad sure loves taking care of that dog he didn't want, look how cute they are together"

Exact opposite for my family. My dad brought home two puppies without even talking to my mom about it. She was the breadwinner so she had to pay for everything, plus she did all the housework so she cleaned up after them.

Exactly. I objected to the dog because I knew damn well I was going to be the one taking care of it. And sure enough…..

Wish me luck. 1 year on and holding strong. Not that I do nothing, but I am not primary and when I don't feel like doing food/walk/etc I don't. Made wife and eldest kid promise and they get pissed but I still hold em to it.

Good on you. One of my friends told his wife/kids that they could get a dog if they wanted but that he did not want a dog so he would not do any of the work to care for the dog. He has held strong too.
