This is a clip from a D&D game. The woman (Siobahn) is playing her character, an anxiety-ridden elven Divination Wizard, while the man (Brennan) is the DM and playing her NPC toxic older sister. They're reconnecting after some time apart and growing experiences, and older sister has a lot of cats for some reason, which Siobahn is questioning because she's used to her sister's reasons for things being "cruelty" and "selfishness," in no particular order.
It's Dimension 20, so it's usually got a lot of comedic bits... But I would expect that as a veteran player, you've had in-character conversations with a GM or done it from the GM's perspective... A little surprising to me to see that reaction.
I believe the background here is that Brennan asked the players to list a character flaw for each of their characters and Siobahn picked panic attacks.
I really love his permissive DM style, like the players just come up with the most wacky nonsensical bullshit thing and he just takes it in stride, describes their idea as if it was always in his plan, and doesn't ever seem to get upset about it derailing his plans for the campaign. I aspire to that level of DMing
Matt Mercer: I try to let my players do the thing they want, but I have intricately planned out my entire fictional world. I will include every minute detail from my players backstory so they feel woven into the world.
Brennan Lee Mulligan: I have no more idea about what will happen next than my players do, but I'm gonna improv the shit out of it and you're gonna believe it's all planned. I will change my plans at a moments notice to include something my players JUST came up with.
EXU Calamity was really the first time I’d ever really seen him GM. It was incredible. His description of how Travis’s character noticed the invisible cultist was inspired.
So essentially when a wizard uses invisibility the spell allows light to pass through their body but your eyes still need to reflect light to see, even if it’s just a pinprick. Travis rolled above a 30 and it was those two tiny pinpoints of reflection that he saw. I’m really not doing it justice though, Brennans description was so good.
I adore dimension 20 clips and brennan and siobhan and emily, so why is actually listening to D20 so dull? lord I have tried but I swear Brennan has like 4 NPCs he rotates between and the combat -> talkie bits of every episode is like as formulaic as it gets. Idk why it doesn't click but something just aint right
I have multiple times. Bahumia 1 and Trinyvale are gold. IDK what is missing the mark about campaign 3 for me but I've listened to the first 20 episodes twice and all I can remember about it is the frog likes being stepped on
I've found that I just can't get into watching other people play D&D at all. I enjoy playing it myself, but when you expect me to watch 8-10 episodes that are two hours long each, that's just too much.
They changed it up once they went more digital so not every season is roleplay-combat-roleplay-combat-etc. But if you gave Starstruck Odyssey a try and didn't like it, it's just not for you.
Wait sorry, Adventure zone is MBMBaM. It is also good, Both are much more about creative storytelling and skipping over a lot of the rulesing behind the edits.
It's not that new it's been going for a while. This is the third season of a DnD actual play series called "Fantasy High" which is one series of many under the "Dimension 20" umbrella. The first season of Fantasy High is all on Youtube and is really fun. I think "Escape from the Blood Keep" is all on there as well which is a send-up of LoTR with the players all playing Tolkien-esque villains.
The second season of Fantasy High has also gone up on Youtube, to get people hyped for this third season. The first season of the Unsleeping City, a magical D&D New York City is also up there.
The ad-free direct funding model means they need to do "meatier" content people are willing to pay for. It is unfortunate because some of those sketches were great, like Brennan's CEO series. I'd imagine if they started doing them again, they'd be designed around the tiktok/instagram/yt shorts format to help rope people in.
I'm plenty willing to pay for them. I was subscribed for years, just waiting for them to bring the sketches back. The problem is sketches are expensive. A single sketch will take a writer several days, then a whole crew spends a day shooting it, an editor spends another day on it and then you end up with a 3 minute video. Alternatively, you can shoot a 20 minute gameshow episode in a few hours.
They're doing a thing that's kind of a sketch/improv hybrid called "Very Important People" where an actor or actors gets made up into a look without knowing what in advance, and has to improvise a character on the spot, and another person does an "interview" with them. I think it's hilarious.
