Well RGB are used as additive colors. Red, green, and blue light sources produce white. CMY is for subtractive colors.

There are additive (RGB) and subtractive (CYM) primary colors. You need subtractive for real-life painting, and additive digitally.

Not complex really. Additive blending means colors are brighter as you mix. Mixing colors of light always yields a brighter color.
