DNR orders are typically in Living Wills, and are included when someone has a debilitating chronic illness. They know that it's likely their body will give out, and due to the pain/illness, they do not want to be revived if their heart stops or something else gives out, because their quality of life will be even worse if they survive.

as @sometimesarobot mentioned, it coincides with a medical term 'do not resuscitate', which means not to attempt to bring you back if your heart stops or similar. some folks would rather just check out than deal with potential side effects (or they've got bullshit like unending pain and the like and figure it would be best just to be done when they're done, shit sucks for some folks)

Thing is, there's a lot of stuff you can't do once you're old, have broken ribs, and find once. My father passed 2 summers back, he had a DNR, and idiopathic fibrosis, he couldn't race his cars anymore, and all his kids had successfully flown the nest. His father spent a decade dying from parkinsons. I love my dad and I miss him, but I wouldn't have him suffer just to have him back.

My mother passed last February and she also did not want to be kept alive at all cost. She had two strokes a couple years ago, she recovered and kept doing her things at 75, minus losing peripheral vision in her left eye. The third stroke was major and on the other side of her brain. Doc said that IF they were allowed to do something, odds were that she would not be the same or even functionnal. Fuck that... I'm glad she chose that because I would not want to see her bed ridden or messed up.
