My pops used his dogs name to order dog stuff online, imfo was sold and my pos kept getting scam calls and emails addressed to his dog. I had to explain it to him.
WellThatsOriginal
My wife is a Commissioner at the Board of Elections here in NY. I can't wait to show this to her... lol.

Being a government mule, I can absolutely guarantee that, even if this particular vignette is made up, things like this can _and do_ happen. I can also guarantee that the person they talked to on the phone was doing their best to not crack up and make sure they dotted every i and crossed every t because bureaucracy demanded it, and left no room for editorials.
sirbartonslady
I believe most of it except for the apology letter. I expect the bureaucracy failed to remove him from the voter rolls.
OmNachoMama
The bureaucracy would have removed the voters name from the roles, and not ever delivered a voters registration card to them
ChopOnBrother2021
I don’t believe any of it but it is a lovely story anyhow.
vorodar
This article claims the story is fiction. I don't know what they base this on, though - they give no sources. But there is a "loosely based on" story:
https://www.fashiontimes.co.uk/feline-jury-duty-viral-tale-felix-cat-1761193
I tried to check by googling "felix martinez cat jury" and set a to date of 2026-07-01 (the post is from few days later). However I got loads of results that still quoted the post (presumably the results are from "in the future" today). I still loved the story, though.

I had a similar issue with a renewed driver's license. It expired 30 days after it was issued. Tried it getting a new one issued with correct date but they wanted me to pay full price because it would be another renewal. Even though they admitted the error was on their side.
RealRaceRiotsAreAboutGettingBlueshelledInMarioKart
I had a similar issue with a catch 22 between Maryland and Missouri. What should have been a $10 fee and a rational person making a note ballooned into a $1700 ordeal over six months.
Luorric
Details?
RealRaceRiotsAreAboutGettingBlueshelledInMarioKart
So I lived in Missouri when I joined the air force, it was my home of record. This is important. My last station before separating was Maryland. So I drove from MD to MO while technically a MO resident with a vehicle registered in MD. MD requires an additional insurance step as part of registration. MO wouldn't let me get new MO tags and told me to keep MD tags. As a MO resident I wasn't 'new' nor was the vehicle a 'new purchase' I had to wait until +/-90 days of tags expiring. >
RealRaceRiotsAreAboutGettingBlueshelledInMarioKart
So to cancel my tags in MD would've just been a $10 fee. However, you have to be a MD resident showing you're leaving MD to do so. As I wasn't an MD resident, I didn't qualify. Since the vehicle was operated in MO, I had to have insurance in MO. MO insurance doesnt have the additional step that MD has so there was no number to put in an MD box. So what this meant, according to MD, I owned and operated a vehicle with MD tags without MD insurance. I got a letter from the DMV saying to update >
RealRaceRiotsAreAboutGettingBlueshelledInMarioKart
My insurance to an acceptable policy from MD. There was some form I filled out explaining this, but it was rejected because the solution wasn't "carry both MD and MO insurance concurrently" (which I asked my insurer about and they said they actually wouldn't insure me for a state I didn't operate the vehicle in). But I started racking up fees. I couldn't get through on the DMV line for MD for a human to pick up. At this point I'm deployed in an undisclosed location. >

My brother-in-law's first name is Larry. He was living in Texas for a while and had to get a new driver's license. They issued him a license with the full name "Larry Warry" which is definitely not his last name, or even close. Eventually he moved again and got a new license, but he'll always be Larry Warry to us.

Are you a cat? Sounds like something a cat would write.

I am meont a cat! I meown...look over there!
GroovyCrowley
I don't care if real or not, it is hilarious.
lDanielHolm
I mean... IF this happened, it'd most likely be because a *human* called Felix Martinez got mixed up with Felix the Cat.
ricpaul
There used to be an animated cat called Felix in commercials for Felix cat food. But the cat alone wasn't enough, so now they hired Robbie Williams... I didn't get triggered by "Felix Martinez", but reading "Felix the Cat" made this core memory surface... An email about the Felix screensaver also happens to be the oldest email in my hotmail account (from January 2000) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMs5fym-9IM
GhostofCharlieKirk
Felix the cat is older than Mickey Mouse bro
ricpaul
I have no clue if it is just a Dutch brand or not. Just like I have no idea if you're referring to the brand-animated-cat or e.g. a comic strip featuring a Felix the Cat that the brand just piggy-backed on... It just triggered a memory that they now sullied with Robbie WIlliams...
Evo435
The cat being registered to vote but the human not being registered seems like you can draw an obvious conclusion about what happened here. The human wrote the wrong name on their registration at some point for some reason and it never came up until the jury duty summons.
backrideup9
Some poor human named Felix just got dropped from the voter roll.
tuxedobob
He should have changed his address then.
Mitheral
And he'll have a hell of a time re-registering because the system thinks he's a cat.
Sticklebrickk

FlatPlutoSociety
Yeah, Felix Hernandez is a pretty common name, and there are bound to be a few in any town with much of a Latino population. Probably just a database error and matching the cat's name is a coincidence. Assuming the broad strokes of the story are true, I hope the actual human Felix didn't end up with too much of a paperwork headache.
chencking
It can't be. They had OP's address.

*Martinez. My Mariners fan brainworms are showing.

When my grandmother died the DMV kept mailing her handicap placard. It took years to resolve. 1st time I responded with a letter and a copy of her death certificate. 2nd I called and mailed another copy of the DC. By the 3rd time I also got her state ID renewal so I sent in one last copy of the DC and changed her mailing address to the cemetery.
Kazpur81S
I love the “please prove you are not deceased” while the person stands there in the clerk’s presence with all required documents.

IAmNotNSAsodonotbeparanoid
Felix won. That is all.

Most cats are registered at their vets under the cat's 1st name and the owner's last name. My cat Max Johnson (<-real cat, fake last name) could conceivably be mistaken for a person on paper. So it's at least somewhat believable.
AlexanderElcazorro
Imagine being completely innocent, waiting for a speedy and simple trial to prove that, and one of the jury members arrives in a cat carrier.

I got jury summons twice.
First time: "I'm not a citizen yet, can't serve on a jury."
Them: "Prove it."
Second time: "I'm a citizen now, but you sent me the letter asking that I turn up in the past last year."
Them: "Well, can you get there in time?"

Thats a lot of correspondence to not mention the fact that he's 7 years old.

This looks like a funny story to make you laugh, but functions as a vehicle to promote voter conspiracy theories.
artemiyny
Dont care if this actually happened or not, but I had a chuckle. in this environemnt its would be fun (non) fiction comic or short novel to read nevertheless
emu314159127001
It's the wholesome story of bureaucratic incompetence we all need
LuminoZero
I work for a State Government, I 100% believe this story.
universeHacker
Yep, this is great writing... doesn't matter if it actually happened or not, because it perfectly captures the true experience of dealing with faceless bureaucracy. Systems made up of real people that act as cogs in a faceless machine and nobody is even allowed to use any common sense.
Cataleast
I really like how the author manages to tickle the imagination with dialogue that consists mainly of single-sentence lines. Like, I can clearly imagine the tone with things are said.
kbryant414
This story has been circling since 2010, pops up every now and then when people are worried about voting, under different names or with different details added. The denial reasons tend to be consistent, which is why it's probably the same story recycled and not multiple incidents. https://www.nbcnewyork.com/video/news/national-international/cat_called_for_jury_duty_all__national_/2169143/

Only thing topping this is the irish bloke who served their current prime minister while high on molly or something.

cyno01
I care a little bit cuz chuds are gonna point to this and be like, 'see if a cat can register to vote of course illegal immigrants can!'
TK421isAFK
This is exactly the fear the story is intended to provoke. It's complete bullshit, but it scares old people into voting for Trump's causes.
vigilante397
The original poster confirmed that this did not actually happen.
cyno01
People believed they were eating the cats and dogs, people will believe the cats and dogs are voting.
Sageypie
Yeah, that was my issue with it. It's a fun story, and I wish we lived in a world where it could just be that. But it reeks of being some weird insidious propaganda to get people to believe in election fraud.
Just a whole, "look at this mistake. If it could happen to a cat, accidentally, then of course a person could *easily* do it on purpose. Look how easy this was and how hard it was to correct..."
It sucks. The future is so fucking stupid.
cyno01
Yeah, i want to enjoy a fun Kafkaesque story, but at the moment voter rolls are under serious enough threat we probably shouldnt joke about it. Even fake, maybe especially fake, this is exactly the sort of story talking heads on FOX would point to when talking about election security.
Theyre e̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ voting, the cats and dogs!

You register to vote and then you get jury duty. Ask your cat who he voted for, you might have a bigger problem than you think.
FlatPlutoSociety
No need to ask. Your cat voted for the libertarian candidate.

Back in the late 1980s, our 2nd border collie got a pre-approved credit card with a $5k limit (approximately $15k now) because of her “fine British heritage.”
(One of my friends asked if he could help ruin her credit rating, which was better than his.)
