Coal Bunke Fires were pretty normal at that time and they did the most reasonable think: Used all the Coal in Bunker #5. The only thing what the Coal Bunker Fire did was warp the hatch to the Coal Bunker which was then no longer watertight. That a Coal Bunker fire weakens a Hull would mean that it heat well above 300-400°C which is literally impossible if the Ship moves as the whole ship acts as a Heatsink which dumps the Heat into the Water. One of the Reasons why you stay underway.
