My family didn’t have to hear this noise. I edited the modem string to turn off the speaker before it picked up the line.

The modem’s speaker volume is an option that can be set at anytime. The default was to leave it on for dialing & connecting, then turn off.

I just turned the volume off before it picked up the line. If it didn’t connect, I wouldn’t know what the problem is right away, that’s all.
