It finally happened! I'm so happy and so nervous but I did it. I escaped the Rent Trap once and for all!!!
Found this one on my own without my realtor. A good solid home from the 50s. Lots of little nitpicks to fix but a strong foundation to build from. The home inspector said it was one of the best maintained homes they've seen from that era in recent memory so that's gotta be worth something.

Next step: Save up for repairs.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for you! It's just that we've had several problems suddenly arise just this year, and then the actual cost to fix the roof was something like 50% higher than the original estimate.
So set aside an emergency repair fund, so you don't end up needing a loan if bad things happen.

Congratulations. Start up a repair/renovation fund early. Having even a few thousand set aside can save your ass when the roof starts leaking or the water heater pops. If you go long enough without bad things happening, you have funds to redo those cabinets or update the bathroom. I was gonna get new couneetops, then my toilet broke.

My god I literally got a full on separate roof inspection on my house option and got my insurance company to confirm it was insurable because it's older but there's no damage. 12 months later "....yeah we're not insuring this without a replacement. It's too old." whee.

Ahahaha! Sorry for the lop-sided roof. That left part is actually a bathroom poking out and the right side has a Solar Panel on it so I guess that's how they compensated for it? Dunno much about architecture.

Ah you may mean that upper part on the roof? Dunno yet. I am not a huge fan of that slatted siding look but obvs beggars can't really be choosers in some cases. Might have it re-painted.

I'm gonna be perfectly frank with you. If someone genuinely wants to break into my home that bad I really don't feel posting blurry pics of my keys is the bigger issue... I know how to pick locks myself, these keys aren't going to keep me safe if someone wants in my house. That's what the bat is for.

Totally fair point. Locks are basically just a way to indicate that others aren't welcome, for all the bypass and pick resistance they usually offer. I try not to make it too easy, but in the end you are right and a brick through the window is easier still.

Yes, so the solution to that is to learn how to cut keys by hand and how to do it from sight alone with no measurements and do it so well that you get it first try every time.
Or you go through the back door or do it at night.

The trick is that it doesnât have to be a key blank. You can print out the picture of the key sized to match a normal key, tape it to a lid from a can, and cut around the outline.
Will it be durable? No. But will it open the lock once without too much fuss? Yup. And nobody will know youâre not supposed to be there.
Youâre right that the risk to most people is minimal. But still, donât do it.

Spending all that time to cut out a key is still significantly more effort than picking a lock or simply popping it with a crowbar or flathead screwdriver. Night time and back doors exist, and idk about yours but my neighbors don't hold 24/7 surveillance on my front door.

Making a key of a photo is much easier. Its all standardised and the key can be decoded and cut in a matter of minutes. Keys are like 4-6 number combinations and OP just put the combination for their house online.

I can pick locks, I had a 1 hour course one weekend, I have no idea how to cut a key. Also to what end? I'm going to travel who knows how far to rob a house that has who knows what valuables or what kind of other security?

Not enough for someone who's worked with keys. They can still figure out the bitting from the profile and a little trial and error.
But you should always change your keys after moving in anyways, don't want the real estate agent or previous owners coming back.

Unsure, but it was built in the 50s so probably more solid construction than most modern homes I would guess.
