Creeping along stealthily and accidentally trigger a wave and then rising sounds of "Oh Yeah!" "Snap into a slim jim!" begin surrounding you.

The 2.88MB were rare. Don't think I ever encontered one.

oh man. i bought The Doom Hacker's Guide back in 1995 or 6 when i was a youngling and i spent so much time editing Beastie Boys samples into the soundscape and creating custom maps. that book and game were my first real entry points into software hacking and i grew up to have a career in cybersecurity. i am certain that, without Doom, i would be doing something drastically different today

You could also download them from BBSes but that often took a decent chunk of time. When Doom came out, I was flying high at 14.4k speeds and downloading the shareware version could often take 30+ minutes depending on a lot of factors.

AOL had a big depository of game mods including DOOM wads. Notable ones were Simpsons and howard stern sound packs. They had a bunch of fully downloadable games too.
