I will say it every time. Empathy is literally one of humanity's superpowers. It's a huge part of how we ended up the dominant species here. Something has gone extremely wrong to deny ourselves the empathy.
The trick I use for rooting out shitlords online is their incapacity for empathy. They have learned how to mimic the superficial trappings of "reasonable discourse" and phrase their arguments to disguise their intentions, but they are fundamentally incapable of empathy. As such, they will never concede any ground because they cannot acknowledge other viewpoints as legitimate, and they will never acknowledge culpability for harm their actions cause people who aren't "people".
I don't want Muskrat to feel empathy at this point. I want him to feel 500 degrees starting at his feet, while he feels rope binding him hands. until he can no longer feel at all because his nerves have been burned away. I want him to feel helpless and beg for death. He's a monster and needs to be treated as such.
Civilization began when empathy started. Human remains with evidence of healed broken bones shows others cared for the victim while they recovered. This self sufficiency crap is wrong headed and self destructive. Of course it’s seductive and serves the purposes of the powerful, so it’s getting amplified just now.
it's why the first thing they do in a way is dehumanize the enemy. because if you CARE about the other wise, you won't be willing to kill them. and right now there's a LOT of dehumanization being thrown around.
Yup, it's not fire, dark angels, or hooved feet, it's malignant narcissism and sociopathy. If you have never cried for someone else's pain in your life then you are probably evil.
Does this leave out the "I've done my part!" mindset..? e.g. recycling. It's pointless. If people saw the scope of the problem, they'd see that it's a farce. But it lets ppl feel they've done all that could be expected, now back to their stories. My GF has a mindset like that. She does "district day of service" at work, as though that had ANY impact on the problem. "I've offered enough empathy" kind of thoughts..
How is the idea that "if you can't solve 100% of a problem then it's not worth trying at all" any better? Not every system will be perfect, but there will be positive outcomes, especially when the majority of people participate. Convincing them that their efforts are meaningless is incredibly regressive thinking and only prolongs and worsens problems.
These things are emotional salves, for a festering wound.. they're boondoggles. They don't just "not solve 100%", friend ... Their accumulative impact is - 0.0000000001% of the problem - obviously enough to give the folks here the very same "you did it, champ" defensiveness That or this forum really has chosen path of least resistance, exactly the same as the RWNJs
This is true. Legalized unrestrained greed is also promoted here these days. Perhaps we could...I don't know...enact laws to stop people from taking advantage of other people?
The right have officially declared empathy to be a sin. Next, it will become a crime. Sympathy has its place, but empathy in what motivates people to do good. It's the beating heart of Christianity (you know, the good sort) but in the minds of Christo-fascists, it's what the bad guys do. I despair: https://www.aomin.org/aoblog/theologymatters/on-the-sin-of-empathy/
There are no good sort of Christians. There are good people who happen to be Christians, but they exist in all religions and without. Good people are not defined by religious affiliation.
I only mention Christians because the MAGAs all claim to be good Christians. They're no better than Muslim fundamentalists who use their religion to control the people they claim to protect and to excuse their own crimes.
I mean, trying to take the compassion out of Christ is about the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. I mean, American Christians tend to be a kind of mix of cargo cults anyway (I’m looking at you Joel Osteen), but THAT in particular, is crazy. They know better than 2,000 years of the story retold with the love thy neighbor and help the poor and sick stuff? HUBRIS!!!
Naah. One can lack empathy, and choose to fake it. Lacking empathy is limiting, but it does not remotely make you evil. And, well, in many cases it's not a lack of empathy as such, but a specific belief that some are not worthy of empathy for reasons of race, religion or other means.
That is why empathy is systematically eroded by dehumanizing the enemy to rank "vermin". After all most humans do still feel empathy towards most animals, so the dehumanization needs to go even lower than that.
I choose to interpret the absence of empathy as lacking both the feeling of empathy and the choice of empathy.
Is it what he meant? Hell if I know. But people who lack the feeling can still know "being" empathetic is good and thus put forth empathetic actions. I think there is a good quote from Skyrim that fits here.
A complete absence though, is the lack of both the feeling and action.
Lotta comments here trying to define SithElephant back into the group but I think we have to instead face that they have simply told us that they're evil.
There's two forms of empathy, Emotional Empathy and Cognitive Empathy. Emotional empathy is the one you get when you see the person, i.e. you're crying because they're crying. You're directly affected by their emotions. Cognitive empathy is the more intellectual one where you think about how others you don't know and never will meet may feel. It's possible to have one without the other, and also suppress one by "othering" groups of people. It's how people may love a single LGBTQ+ person, but
Thank you, you certainly hold a depth of knowledge I don’t have. I’m not any sort of an expert but trying to understand how 48/52 voter splits keep happening. I do believe that a divide is in some way genetic after millennia of involuntary selection. A spread of Good vs Evil, empath to sociopath.
Usually civilisation and social justice holds the extremes in tow, but war and now social media anonymity allow base thoughts to flourish. Both “good and bad” are liberated.
He did not. But statements about a specific group of people with a characteristic getting read as applying to all people with that characteristic is a major part of the evils of the world, to the point that I think the addition is warranted.
I’m of the opinion that over 100,000 years or so human evolution included influence by an evolutionary advantage towards rape. There are those of us that are the product of rape and that mindset is in some way passed on, either genetic or as this thread considers non-empathetic disposition. Conversely there is the advantage of empathy and social solidarity. Humanity is a mix of both. The empathetic vs the selfish.
Yes, compassion is active and positive. Empathy is neutral, feeling somewhat what other people do is how the dark triads/tetrads use the little empathy they have to harm others.
"Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders doesn't officially diagnose people as psychopaths or sociopaths. They use a different term instead: antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). Traits include: Insincere charm Getting easily bored Compulsive lying Manipulation of others No remorse or guilt Little emotional reaction Cruelty without feeling bad about it Taking advantage of others Lack of Empathy Failure to accept responsibility Many sexual relationships
Common usage has yet to catch up with the DSM. If I tell someone I have autism level 1, they get confused. If I tell them I have Asperger's, they nod and say how it explains my odd behavior. Someday, the current clinical terms will become common, just in time for even newer clinical terms to replace them.
I keep saying these people are not Christians. They follow none of the tenants of the Christian faith. If I believed in religion, I don’t, I think all religion should be scrubbed from earth, but if I did believe it, these people would be the literal wolf in sheep’s clothing Jesus warned about. In other words, the devil’s servants.
Who defines what's "Christian"? The bible is full of atrocities and Jesus said some very fucked up shit too. Jesus is the one that brought forever Hell to the table. And said not one word of the old law was changed. You can pick and choose whatever you want from the book and read whatever you want into the rest. It's not that they're not Christian, it's just that Christian isn't a synonym for good or decent.
Exactly, they aren't Christians but Old Testamentarians worshipping "an eye for an eye" and ignoring J.C.s teachings of "love everyone like you love yourself". Sadly big parts of the big churchs aren't any better. 2000 years of patriarchy and belittle women (and minorities) undermined J.C.s teachings in general. But I think you don't need a church to live a life of empathy.
I keep seeing people say that they’re not Christians. They are. They are a community of people who define themselves by their beliefs, and the fact is. Christianity is one of the greatest practitioners of hate and evil that has ever existed.
Individual christians may be lovely folks. As a collective you’d be hard pressed to find a more hateful group. (Without resorting to another monotheistic practitioner of hate, with whom Christendom had several crusades against.)
Any time one of them tries to tell me I'll be "punished forever" I just laugh in their face and ask them if they think their heart will be lighter than a feather? (https://www.worldhistory.org/article/42/the-egyptian-afterlife--the-feather-of-truth/) Because as much as they might not believe in the Egyptian pantheon or afterlife, I do not believe in their version of Christian mythology.
The bible is contradicting itself hard enough you can still interpret all the hate one's heart desires into god's demands and actions. Even old Jesus is quoted "But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’" in Luke 19:27.
You're ignoring the entire context. That's the final line of the Parable of Ten Minas, where Jesus is telling a story to the people of Jericho about a fictional king. It's part of the parable's narrative where the king punishes disobedient servants, not Jesus saying that he wants his own enemies gathered up for killing.
The entire point of a parable is to share a type of universal truth, and for his one is for Jesus's followers to grow the christian faith in his absence. The addition of having the enemies of the king killed is included the make sure the followers know that people who have heard the gospel but don't convert are to be seen as enemies of the faith. And the Christian faith has treated a lot of nonbelievers pretty faithfully to that verse over the course of history.
I am a Christian but no longer attend church. I can tell you with much shame that what we are seeing today is not really new. I cannot recall a single church I attended growing up that made me feel welcomed, safe, or even loved. The only times I've ever felt my faith and truly connected with god is during private communion and prayer. The christian community is sick and it has been for a long time.
for context: I'm a cis-gendered straight white male who grew up in a Chicago suburb. This had nothing to do with race, gender, or preference. My parents was bad with money they were fat and we were dirty kids. We weren't even poor or trashy just a family of 4 boys and 2 exhausted parents who worked full time. We were seen as trash because mom and dad were fat. Dad is on the spectrum and aphasic so he was mostly ignored and folks gossiped that he was "retarded" (was a different time in the 90s)
and mom was obviously lazy and sinful because she was so overweight. What they never bothered to learn was that mom was a special education teacher and very dedicated and loving mother and wife. My dad was top of his class in seminary for three years till he stopped pursing it because of his inability to communicate effectively. My parents were both raised by abusive alcoholics and they did the hard thing and broke the cycle. They were never judged even close to accurately because we were dirty.
