This is why I can't get excited about "The Lion King."

Hopes and Wishes In A Pile of Scripts

This is a photo of the inside of a Hollywood screenwriting agent's office. That giant, double-deep stack of paper in the corner? That entire pile is original, unread screenplays sent in by aspiring screenwriters hoping for representation. And this is just one screenwriting agent among countless others.

Somewhere in that pile is a heartbreaking story of love and loss. Somewhere else is a gut-busting comedy. Elsewhere, a tight, tense thriller. And sure, to be fair...a lot of it is probably complete garbage. But the sad part is, we'll never know. Somewhere in that stack is at least one brilliant film that we'll never get to see. Because it will never even get read, much less bought, or produced.

But sure, by all means. Let's have another "Lion King."

Until we stop voting for unoriginal retreads with our entertainment dollars, this will keep happening. We will continue to get the entertainment we deserve.

Sturgeon's Law, 90% of everything is crap

Those two things arnt mutually exclusive. You act like because the lion king exists we cant have the alternative as well.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Send them to Netflix, they won't read them either but you'll get an instant movie and maybe Adam Sandler starring too so what's not to love!

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yeah I'm amped to see the new Lion King Soooooo....

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Dude, go on User Sub and tell me how much of that is worth seeing the front page. Then tell me you want OC after upvoting another dickbutt.

7 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I just upvoted a baby being thrown off a cliff. Didn't think I would get here, honestly.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What have we become?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This post couldn't get more pretentious if it tried. I'm gonna go see The Lion King three times now just out of spite.

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 4

The irony of posting about redoing the same thing over and over instead of creating something original on imgur....

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Maybe some people would rather see the remake than the new thing.

7 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

Would not making the Lion King get those sorted and read? Nope. Everything is a remake or derivative in some way. Nothing new under the sun.

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

If you had to read a pile like that every day for a couple years I'm sure you'd say "fuck it, just make another Lion King" too

7 years ago | Likes 193 Dislikes 5

If you had to browse through user sub every day for a couple years I'm sure you'd say "fuck it, just upvote the repost" too

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I guess you’re right. After some time, you just don’t have the mood anymore.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Lets not act like this is something new. Lion King itself is largely a riff on Hamlet after all....

7 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 3

And even more refers to the story of Josef as well as the one of Moses himself...

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

remake of a japanese (or chinese can't recall) lion's king cartoon you mean ? unofficial remake ofc so they don't pay them copyrights.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

There are literally two similar scenes

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The story is different in a lot of ways, but Disney did seem to rip a lot of stylistic choices from that movie, and some ideas.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The original creator of Kimba the White Lion endorsed the Lion King.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The remake isn't meant for those of us who saw the original tho. It's meant for our kids, who have grown up surrounded by CGI content and >

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

> will thus be drawn to see more of the same.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Just like your resume was the best resume in the pile right?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The original Lion King was itself a remake.

7 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 5

If being heavily inspired by another story is a remake, then 99% of the scripts in that pile are probably remakes as well.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of what?

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 4

Kimba the White Lion. Your lawyers vs Disney's lawyers. What can you do? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfJvKIDS9n8

That as well. Apart from 1 or 2 examples, Disney is always garbage.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

Kimba, the White Lion.

7 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 4

But maybe, and just hear me out here, maybe that *entire* stack is garbage. Do you want to read it all to make sure?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm sure people get sent screenplays on a weekly basis. How often do you think they find anything good?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Infinite Monkey Theorem in action

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If only there was some portal where you could get videos to a wide audience without a larger studio. A tube of sorts, for you.

7 years ago | Likes 87 Dislikes 1

Or a hub maybe? Or even a party? With Lemons?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Out of all the comments this one made me chuckle out loud. Figures the top comment is but another replayed GIF that has been used 1000x

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Oh shit. It's like a microcosm. It's like human nature; Redundancy at it's finest. It's.... like... wayyy too fucking meta for me.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The irony of posting about redoing the same thing over and over instead of creating something original on imgur....

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Let's call it BoobTube®!

7 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I'd prefer TheGlassTeat.yeech, but I think we would get sued.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let's be honest, most of those probably suck.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's a pile of user sub, most of its trash but maybe one or two front pages.

7 years ago | Likes 142 Dislikes 1

Discuss: a movie studio that chooses what it produces in an imgur-like voting system? Art direction could be taken from the comments

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

and then everyone just upvotes a repost. So its exactly the same shit.

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

UserSub is pure gold... the front page is the trash.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 20

Hot Take Alert!!!

Yeah like all those awesome gta shots

7 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

And the countless K-pop photoshops, that I swear is the same guy done by the same guy

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Hey don't forget the Minecraft "proof" pictures of someone being called a doodie head in the chat.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Hey now, you can't use that kind of language in this good Christian community! Go wash your mouth out with soap and holy water.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

To be fair, great indie movies do get released regularly. They may go comparatively unnoticed, but they're out there.

7 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Yup. Every week there is a new batch of indies. Hell, more indies come out yearly than Blockbusters and Disney remakes.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yea, this dude has no clue. This year alone has had great original screenplays. But he hasn't seen them. Because he doesn't look. 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He wants to be walked by the hand to these. No studio is gonna put "The miseducation of Cameron Post" ahead of the lion king, bad business.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Case and point, 2017's wind river is a staggeringly good movie. Bet most people on imgur haven't even heard of it.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Wind river was an amazing movie, chilling in fact.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Make a post to spread the word, watch it die in usersub.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lion King will sell tickets. They go for what ever sells. Lion King sells.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fer chrissakes. My whole point is, if we voted for original movies with our entertainment dollars, that's what would make money.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

If my aunt had balls she would be my uncle. But that’s not how it works.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You’re right, and I can never enjoy watching any sports because of all the athletes that never made. Can’t read published books either.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just because some aspiring screenwriter writes what they think is golden doesn't mean they are owed anything. Get off you soapbox.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's pretty much what happened during the last writer's strike. A bunch of new content showed up, and new methods for delivery.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I feel it's a case of why change something if it works. Lion king was a hit so they're basing the new movie on that same assumption

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is zero-sum thinking. It is possible to remake The Lion King and fund new projects. Hollywood’s problem is the process, not outcomes.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Then, Hollywood takes an original screenplay and makes it... and no one sees it. However, the next Transformers movie? $700M

7 years ago | Likes 1553 Dislikes 8

It's almost like people will

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, they wil.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

haha, i thought this hadn't gone through, but yeah " pay to see transformers" should've been there :)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's because they do it wrong. They should have learned from Doctor Horrible!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Your sales shoot up dramatically if you can get approved to show in China. It's where Transformers get their big box office numbers.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I just assumed all Transformers fans were Trump supporters.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

... I'm not entirely sure I follow your reasoning here.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The movies are eminently stupid. So, I am assuming they are people that want to be easily entertained without using their brains

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Book adaptations, generally, don't do very well, either.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The big difference between those two: marketing.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If they didn't try to make all of those movies into giant blockbusters they'd do well.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well to be fair, the next transformers movies looks pretty amazing. No Michael Bay, original transformer sounds and designs? Sign me up.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Welcome to the Marvel universe

7 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 6

I’ll keep watching them if they remain good movies.

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

You sir, are part of the problem.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 11

yea fuck that guy for enjoying stuff!

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Bumblebee...cuz the mute Transformer is really what brought everyone to the theater...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But it will probably still bring in the $$$

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I owned a copy of What we do in the shadows, and Serenity as fast as i could. Trying to support the little guy.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Are you implying transformers are not original screenplay?

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

Not if you take into account the 80s TV Series/Movie/Comics

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There exist original screenplays that leverage characters from previous works.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It depends on your definition. Elsewhere on this post Dredd is being cited as a remake when it's a different plot/theme to the 90s film.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am implying they are steaming piles of horseshit

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 4

A lot of the Oscar winning films for best film are original stories but most of them I’ve seen I’ve disliked.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

La La Land may be the worst movie I have ever seen

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Worse than Manos: The Hands of Fate? Ah... You probably haven't seen that. But you should. It will give you a new perspective of a bad film.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah, but my guess is that Manos, whatever neither intended to be a great film, nor have the budget

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Are we talking about bad films or not? What a film reports to be or others claim it to be, it's budget, etc. is inconsequential.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

dose watching the mystery Science theater 3000 version count?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I say, yes -- sometimes that's the only way to get through some of these films.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be fair the next Transformers movie could actually be good despite it being, well, both a Transformers movie and a prequel.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Um, no. I would rather have my prostate massaged with an elk horn than see a Michael Bay atrocity

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Damn. I'd just watch the rock and skip the Elk antler up the butt.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

1.) Elks have antlers, 2.) Don't kinkshame my Tuesday evening plans

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

TBH, I am not above trying it.... I have a rule to try everything at least four or five times before poo-pooing it.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's completely understandable, but Bumblebee (2018) is directed by Travis Knight.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Bay is still involved though. He’s a producer and picked the writers.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm just gonna stay cautiously optimistic because the trailers look fun so far.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah but, the new Bumblebee movie directly rehashes the designs from the original 80’s cartoon. So there’s that.

7 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 4

Which is great for those that hated what Michael Bay did to the designs/franchise.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Cool

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good. Bayformers were awful.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're not the same designs.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 8

If you’re going to sit there and tell me that the character designs in the movie aren’t 100% inspired by the classic series... I got nothin.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I'm not sitting here and telling you that. I told you something else. You didn't like it and you're trying to move the goalpost.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Much closer than the other films.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

They usually farm them out to readers who weed out the bulk of the trash.

7 years ago | Likes 385 Dislikes 2

Where can I apply for this job?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And honestly, the bulk of that is probably trash.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

And each writter probably sends out a 1,000 copies

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Reply just incase I find out how to get said job.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do I get to be one of those readers

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wonder how someone would get into that. I'd do it.

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Lol i was wondering the same.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You'd have to be overqualified and you'd be underpaid. Still worth it? Contact them.

I was not. But I've heard the stories about how it's not all doritos and mtn dew

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Live in Hollywood, possibly have some sort of literary or film background (1 screenwriting class) apply

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The guy I know who did it was a working screenwriter for TV and got work as a reader.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

People site J.K. Rowling as having been rejected multiple times. They never elaborate on whether she made changes between attempts.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And that's the nature of the beast. You can only do so much w/ tools available to you to gauge potential of an artistic work.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Or maybe, people with shitty taste have the power to reject great works of art.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Great works of art" is completely subjective, which is why there's only so much you can do to control for that.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lion King trailer has had more views in less time than any other trailer, ever. I don't like remakes, either. But people seem to buy it.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't even mind. I bet most of the stuff in that pile is absolute shite and 90% of the rest wouldn't make money.
