Yesterday morning I made homemade sour cream cake donuts, and they turned out great! Even better than donuts from the bakery. This picture was taken this morning, and I love how well these store. They're just as good the second day, warmed up for 10-15 seconds in the microwave. Yum!!

I just love that crackly glaze, crispy outside, and fluffy insides!

Here is a picture I took yesterday morning, fresh and still slightly warm. These donuts are really amazing and so easy to make! Here is my recipe! :)

Old Fashioned Sour Cream Donuts
Makes about 8-10 donuts and holes

Ingredients

For the donuts:
2 1/4 cup cake flour, spooned and leveled
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 large egg yolks, at room temperature
2/3 cup sour cream
Shortening or vegetable oil, for frying

For the glaze:
3 1/2 cup powdered sugar, sifted
1 1/2 teaspoons corn syrup
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4-1/3 cup hot water (approximately)

Directions

For the donuts:
1. In a bowl, sift together the cake flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, or with a handheld mixer, beat the butter and sugar together until sandy. Add the egg yolks and mix until light and thick. Add the dry ingredients to the mixing bowl in 3 additions, alternating with the sour cream, ending with the flour. The dough will be sticky. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour.
3. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a doughnut cutter or two differently sized biscuit or cookie cutters to cut out as many donuts as possible, dipping the cutters into flour as necessary to prevent sticking. You should get about 10-12 doughnuts and holes. With a knife, lightly slit the donuts 3 times on each 0 side (like a triangle), to help create those "craters" that catch all the delicious glaze. Do not cut all the way through the dough, simply indent it. 4. Pour 2 inches of vegetabl"e oil into a heavy bottomed pot with a deep-fry thermometer attached. Alternatively you can use about 4-5 cups of shortening in a heavy bottomed pot (depending on how big your pot is). Heat to 325°F, or about medium heat. Fry the doughnuts a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry on each side about 2 minutes, being very careful not to let them burn. Let drain on a paper bag or paper towels to soak up the excess grease.

For the glaze:
1. Mix all ingredients in a bowl with a whisk until smooth. Add more powdered sugar if glaze is too runny or more water if glaze is too thick. Immerse each doughnut into the glaze. Place on a wire rack above a sheet pan to catch any excess glaze. Let sit for 20 minutes until glaze is set. Doughnuts are best served the day they are made store really well in an air tight container at room temperature for a few days.

I took my NC wife up to my hometown in Maine and she tried to order one of these at a Dunkin, the look of confusion on the cashiers face...

Sour Cream is the only non-yeast donut I like.

I was really grossed out by this for a second. Then I realized the hair I saw was my dogs hair laying on my phone. Not in the donut. +1rez

Oh baby you...you got what I neeeeeeed....

DELISH! Also, question on the frying method? What specific oil do you need and how much, doesn't it cause risk for a stove-top fire?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And as long as you're careful, you won't start a fire! I've never had that issue frying at home on the stovetop.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually use shortening when I make donuts. I know some people have issues with shortening so you could also use vegetable or canola oil

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks so much!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shortening is solid at room temp (not liquid like veg oil) so it keeps the donuts from becoming soggy from the glaze (yeast or cake donuts)

Its my donut of choice when I go to tim hortons. Also.. those look like the ones they make >,> Now I gotta go on a coffee run. Thanks Mommy

Everyone keeps mentioning they look like those but I've never had Tim Hortons. I want to try it now, though! For comparison :)

yeast donuts are garbage imo. however, cake donuts are delicious gifts from the gods that need to be respected, then devoured.

Cake donuts are basic, homie. Old Fashioned donuts are lit. Ya need to recognize!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fair opinion, but have you had any that aren't Krispy Kreme? Real bakery donuts are pretty damn amazing

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ive never had krispy Kreme, they aren't around where I live. just had local daylight donuts. I could just be missing out on good donuts

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These look amazing. I'm going to try this with granulated Splenda as I'm aiming for low sugar ... I hope it still works!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I think it'd work just fine for the donut dough, but it wouldn't work for the glaze.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I looked up a different recipe for glaze that involved corn starch. Or I could just let that one aspect be sugary ...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You could always just dunk the top into the glaze instead of the entire donut, that'll cut down a bit on the sugar!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it just me or they look as (no offense) someone jizzed over them?

Every time I post a picture of homemade glazed donuts (or other glazed desserts), this comment is made lol. So it's not just you!
