I won a bicycle race at age 9 in exactly that way. The erstwhile leader stopped pedaling while he lifted his arms in celebration and I kept on pedaling right past him.
I tried to look it up. The woman is Gan Zhifang who passed Xiao Fen in the Mar 2025 Chongqing Women's Half Marathon in China, but, I can find absolutely nothing about her being injured.
I think sports would be better if this was in fact prohibited, at least the deliberate premature celebrations (as opposed to confusion about it being mature). Otherwise it's fundamentally cringe and is rude to everyone else and occasionally very regrettable to the clown, it messes with record keeping, it creates a hazard to both them and others, and like the first guy shows it breeds panic leading to illegal moves.
Yeah it really it is a danger, in many cases the person from behind is (obviously) still moving at competitive high-speed and now there’s an idiotic unpredictable obstacle on the track…the premature celebrator throwing their arms up or whatever. Especially for example the bicycle one where the come-from-behind guy has to duck to make sure he didn’t get hit by the idiot’s arms. Some of the runners are like a car stopping in middle of highway. GIVE THEM A FINE. The loss is not bad enough.
That's what my coach always used to tell me when I was in school… You must never, ever start slowing down a few meters before the line, but always after it. Run at full speed until you've crossed the line !! I can still hear him saying that to me 20-23 years later. :)
This reminds me of that video with the coach whose like 'winning is being better than your previous best a little every day'. Showboating and being a poor sport deserve them the L.
'Better than your previous best. That's what I tell family members when they ask why bother signing up for races, you'll never compete. It's not about competing against others, it's about competing against yourself
Jeez, I had to try and look it up. The woman is Gan Zhifang who passed Xiao Fen in the Mar 2025 Chongqing Women's Half Marathon in China. I can find absolutely nothing about her being injured. 😳
There is premature Victory and there is premature gloating. Victory is understandable if you've gone through a major physical strain and finally get to the end. Gloating, nah get recked if it goes awry, no sympathy.
The opposite ends of the premature celebration are that entitled asshole and the guy in the middle that is like "oh shit" but still grinning and just trying to recover
Jérémy Jurkiewicz (which looks like it should be pronounced Jerky-vich, but isn't). He could have been yellow carded and had a 30s penalty (possibly meaning he wouldn't even place), but 2nd place Igor Amorelli didn't protest. You can see Amorelli slow down even before reaching Jerky-vich, so it seems like he intended to hand the victory to him.
You mean the third clip. I played it frame by frame and couldn’t quite tell whether she’d been momentarily suspended before the leading heel touched - it’s very close, if so.
I was under the impression he was referring to the second runner in the first clip, which is not speedwalking. I acknowledge that "the second" could also be in reference to the second clip...which is also not speedwalking. The third clip is speedwalking.
In fact, if I start tallying the top scientists, coders, and engineers I know, they are all also excellent athletes. Not an inactive one among them. Usually runners or climbers.
Feels a bit mean. I know there's a jock stereo type and all, but plenty of athletes, especially runners in my experience, are quite intelligent and caring people.
Oh bud, I would have beat the shit out of the first dude. Like, not right then. Talk to the stewards, get him DQ'd then kick his arse somewhere else at a later date.
Hell yeah bud, I'm so tough I could PROBABLY beat up a 5 year old girl. If she had severe physical disabilities. And someone else had already worked her over first. And she was blindfolded. Maybe.

Luckily we were so bad we never had to worry about losing first. Coach just told us to survive.

I never liked sports and after 50 years still dont. but this is how you do it if you mean it. Full effort to the end. celebrate later.

My children's band teacher always says you are not competing against the other bands, you were competing against your best score.
It helped motivate them last year to the point where they got second at state.
Every competition was a better score than the previous one and their final score was the best the school has ever received.
I hope he uses the same speech this year.

This is why every Olympic podium is Gold celebrating the victory, Bronze celebrating being on the podium, and Silver pissed that they didn't get Gold.

Second should also be DQd. In a walking competition, one heel needs to be on the ground at all times.
