Honestly though, if you wanna drive one fine but don't make it an annoyance for everyone else

A loud Harley sounds good. Way better than the modern whiny bees in a can.
ilikeboobiesandbooties
Loud pipes because it's safer, but won't wear a helmet.......
HaircutsOfNicholasCage
I think less of Harley riders too. Pipes are fine though.

It's a class thing-if you walked in on Einstein picking his nose and eating it you'd instantly lose respect for him, ya know.
Justjustin2300
Its so you can hear them when they are coming so they dont die
symocia
Rather be alive with a loud bike, then dead with a quiet one.
crepeape1234
The two are not mutually exclusive.
HawesomeSaucePan
That's one of the biggest reasons they do it
OhBrantley
I misunderstood, is the being heard thing on the road make a big difference because it's not hard to see motorcycles
krugle
I have pretty large blind spots around my truck, if a small sedan is close enough to my tailgate I can't see them let alone a bike.
veilsidebpu
I hate the "safety" excuse. It's bullshit. See my comment below.
getadogupya
Of course it is. If that was the reason, they'd all be wearing high vis vests as well.
OhBrantley
What's the appeal? Everyone I know hates the sound of them wouldn't it be annyoing to be right next to the source of the sound
HaircutsOfNicholasCage
It's not uncontroversial, but many riders feel it is safer. Other drivers are more aware of you, which could save your life.
HaircutsOfNicholasCage
I for one have pipes loud enough that most cars can hear me anytime I'm within a couple car lengths and their radio is off.
HaircutsOfNicholasCage
Also, FYI the sound of air flowing around a helmet is actually much louder to the rider. Pipe noise isn't a huge factor with a helmet.
dbba
So why are Harley's usually louder than other motorbikes and their riders rarely wearing reflective, bright clothing?
HaircutsOfNicholasCage
Because hearing and sight are different senses, and they figure relying on more than one is probably a good strategy.
dbba
So, as is my question, why not rely on both?
HaircutsOfNicholasCage
Oh, a few reasons. One is how intrusive each is to the rider... special obnoxious clothing is much more so, with less likely payoff.
HaircutsOfNicholasCage
The bigger reason though is that bikes aren't hard to see because of their color. It's because of their size.
