There will be a projected 350,000 nurse shortage by 2026, and now the Trump Department of Education has put a limit on how much nurses can take out in loans for their education. At the exact time the administration should be making funds available, they are strangling them off instead. https://www.statesman.com/news/article/nursing-no-longer-professional-degree-21198671.php

I’ve worked in the nursing field for 30 years nearly and you know why they’re doing this? I live in the podunkinest part of a very red state yet have met very few conservative nurses. Education breeds liberalism. And nursing is frankly one of the few college level jobs that’s 1: available everywhere and 2: has paid internships. (Clinicals)

I'm currently in school for respatoury therapy and will be graduating in June 2026. I really hope pushback for future nurses and people like me that are in respatoury. In my area there is a 1-2 year wait to get into the RN program. If this happens I really feel bad for the future people trying to get in Healthcare. I myself rely on the grants and loans and without them I would be stuck in a dead end job... Guess they want everyone sick, dying,, broke, dumb or dead.

Now you get it. These people do not a well educated population. Those are difficult to controll. And features like having healthcare tied to your job is leverage. Nothing more.

Dear American Nurses:
The British Columbia Nurses Union has one of the strongest Unions in the country, their last contract they got a 3.25% raise the first year and a 6% raise the following two years. They are negotiating another contract this year and are expected to get a bigger raise.
To START, you get 20 paid days off per year and you gain more over time. Free Health, and Vision insurance, massage therapy is covered, $5000 relocation pay... https://bchealthcareers.ca/

Trump has done more damage to America than Russia has managed to since the Cold War. Almost like he's doing it on purpose. That's when you invade another country. If the domestic war on minority groups is no longer sufficient to distract the working class while you rob them blind, you focus their anger on an external enemy. "They hate us for our freedoms! They tried to kill muh daddy! Deus vult!"

I think it's probably more simple than being part of some larger conspiracy to keep people sick. Most nurses are women. This makes it harder for women in general and poor women especially to accomplish something or be treated as a respected professional. Misogyny is part of the Republican platform.

I think poor and in debt is the goal. Dead people can't produce wealth for the .001%

No, they'll fire you the minute your health makes you late for a shift. And then they'll sent the cops to evict you, and Gov Newsom will join them and rob you for being homeless.
Getting beaten to death just means they won't stop hitting you. Ever. If they wanted us to live in any capacity, there'd be a point where they said "we've done enough".

If nursing is out, but finance/business is still in, I hope linda mcmahon breaks every bone in her fucking body, and all the nurses caring for her know about this...
Taxicat
Pretty sure I saw accounting degrees on their hit list, too.
tylerlarson
Yeah. I love how the WHOLE PROBLEM that Trump/Republicans have with nurses is that they help people. If nursing was for assholes then it wouldn't be an issue.
Srsly not even joking: professions that are a net benefit to society are preferred by women and liberals because they more strongly value social good over personal wealth. Therefore, these are "liberal jobs" and therefore need to be attacked and destroyed.
Whatdoyousaytoanicecupoftea
Oh, dont be silly. She'll have access to private nurses. This is about punishing those uppity public sector ones
rubypilgrim
Theology is classed as a skilled profession, so she'll get all the thoughts and prayers she can handle.
DrNicholasRivierA
Exactly- stop treating Republicans "on religious grounds".
TakeAChillPill16
I think this whole post is actually exposing that most people don't understand the definition of a "professional degree." Most definitions are beyond a bachelor's degree - which is what nursing is (BSN = bachelor's of science in nursing). A professional degree is Masters (MS) or higher. This administration is awful for plenty of reasons, but this isn't necessarily one of them. A bachelor's shouldn't cost as much as a master's, that's why they're restricting lending limits.
Bignholy
Problem is, we need more of them. Anything that discourages more of them without a solid reason is a bad thing, especially in the face of the ludicrous money being thrown at things we don't need (like billionaire tax cuts and AI resource drains).
And if they cost too much, the solution is not to remove support for getting more, it's to investigate and, if needed, regulate the educational system producing them.
TakeAChillPill16
I would have to know more about the lending restrictions. Professional degrees, by definition, are degrees designed to take a minimum of 6 years or longer to complete. Most RNs have a bachelor's (BSN), some have a lower level associates degree (LPN). These are programs that are designed to take 4 years or less. That would be the solid reason to have higher lending limits for a 6 year degree than a bachelors. I'm not trying to disrespect nurses - they are professionals. 1/2
TakeAChillPill16
But the definition the education dept is applying is an academic one, not a vocational one. Part of this is just semantics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_degree
Bignholy
They also applied it to Educational and Social Work degrees. Also things we desperately need more of, and things they have traditionally tried to destroy for literal generations. Meanwhile, know what qualifies as professional for the higher cap? Theology.
Forgive me if I question the validity of their justifications, in the context of the last 10 months.
DoodleBug3279
Nursing degrees include masters and doctorate. And those programs can be very expensive. Those professions are also very needed. For example, good luck getting anesthesia for surgery almost anywhere in the US without a CRNA (a nurse anesthetist). Nurses also get higher education for nurse practitioner roles, as well as education and administration. And all of them are usually obtained through colleges of nursing at universities.
TakeAChillPill16
Right, but those graduating from those programs are Nurse Practitioners, who have prescribing privileges and are mid-level providers, one step below physicians. A Nurse and a Nurse Practitioner are two very different jobs.
DoodleBug3279
My point is that those seeking those degrees are now going to be forced into shitty private loans because this will affect them too.
TakeAChillPill16
People are upset because the implication in the post is that nurses aren't "professionals." But the definition of a professional degree is tied to the academic level of the degree, not the professionalism or the overall respect for the job of Nurse.
[deleted]
[deleted]
TakeAChillPill16
That's another matter - in that most of the specialties you named aren't degrees, but certificates and/or specialties that are mostly covered by on the job training after graduation with a bachelor's degree. There are a handful of exceptions that are higher degrees such as Nurse anaesthetists and Nurse Midwives, but you're mostly naming formal or informal certificate programs, not specific degrees.

Know what. I honestly don't care. linda is doing this because she's a terrible person, we have nursing shortages at all levels in the US, she knows this, and is making it harder for new ones to be trained.
So yeah, she can break every bone in her body, she can be in the hospital for years so that she's unable to do her "job". I hope every single person that treats her for the rest of her hopefully short life graduated last in their class and barely passed the nclex.
