By chance I was passing through Pennsylvania today and realized I could adjust my route to see Union Pacific’s Big Boy 4014, the world’s largest steam locomotive, making a rare east coast trip to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. That whistle was the second or third loudest sound I’ve ever heard!
Watched it pass from this cute little ice cream shop that appears to be an old depot.

I didn’t think I would get to, since I’m normally nowhere near Pennsylvania and couldn’t really justify a trip just to see it, but last night I realized I’d be passing through Pennsylvania and could adjust my route to go through Scranton without increasing my journey time much. Well worth the slight detour!

These beasts were built in the 40s and ran till 62. It seems so weird to me that steam engines were still used in the 60s. I think even post retirement there were some hauls that they needed to be used for. Crazy machines.
Now if u wanna get in to real nerd shit the Soviets tried to copy the US and b make big engine and failed fabulously. I wish I remembered the you tube video that ranted about this. It was a weird vid to pop into my feed

I'm not really a train guy according to modern Internet(had train sets as a kid in the 90s) and never watched a video from that guy before. But it was just too interesting to pass up.
