F*** the sandwiches. Come for my rotini casserole, my half beef/half pork roasts, my grilled cheese on Texas toast. God? Satan? I don’t care who you send, I would love nothing more than to cook for a family again. Just, angels and demons, no fighting. Second helpings are always available.
I read this whole story every time it pops up. I grew up Christian, but the notion of demons=bad was a little too simplistic for my curiosity. I've heard some alternate banger stories from older versions, supposedly, and wonder why they got cut.
Arthur Dent? Our one Bob-given sandwich-maker? He who came in a flaming chariot of fire? He whose daughter descended from the heavens in a non-flaming chariot to take him away? Arthur Dent who somehow managed not only not to leave with his daughter, but also to lose a dangerous pan-dimensional bird to her? Arthur Dent friend to Ford Prefect with whom he left by riding the Perfectly Normal Beasts to the lands of the King? THAT Arthur Dent? Never heard of him.
Been there. The trick is now to go and create a new one. Contrary to popular belief, you can ABSOLUTLY choose your family. Because not all family is blood, and (as I'm guessing know) not all blood is family
And I mean that as a compliment. It completely transformed the series for me into something so much grander and more meaningful. I’ll always love the Bio of a Space Tyrant series. And the Mode books have a place in my heart. But Incarnations of Immortality is his best work.
I will always have a soft spot for his Adept series. It was the first of his work I read. BoaST was really good too. Did you read the one from his sister's pov he wrote as a followup?
Well, god being a carnivore would kind of imply he created life to serve as a food supply... And that actually fits with the shepherd imagery. Shepherds don't eat grass...
That's true. There's a really good vegan place near me that I go to sometimes because it's delicious, and I am definitely not a vegetarian or vegan. It's just tasty.
You never know, he could have food allergies... Or you know like his doc says he has to lay off the red meat for his cholesterol health. You don't know what God and his Primary Care Doc talk about!
Trust me, you don't want to be either of those things. (Please send help, the US is dying and the good people seem powerless to stop it... I also understand if you just want to eat popcorn and watch The Fall of Rome 2: American Edition play out)
That was after Noah and the allowance of eatting meat, but you still have a point.. he did ask for alot of chickens.... well... maybe jesus came cause he went vegetarian and was sick of all the meat being sent his way?

There already is one where Satan's a part timer... this feels like a natural alternate take.
jherazob
Well, he's named "Satan", but he's just the stereotypical Overlord from japanese stories, not the Judeochristian Devil

Thanks. I enjoyed it and could see the backyard and that kitchen very clearly. ⬆️

The best demons eat apples and help you to kill bad people.
HasteTheFool
You're thinking 1950's gangsters, the best demons teach you to play new songs on the violin while you sleep.

Very good read. Most enjoyable. It's good to reconnect with lost family lol

I read that quite often, but never in this long version. Really a great read!

Very true. Well said my friend.
HedonistBeard
As long as they weren't and aren't abusive, of course. Then they aren't family and should in fact be treated as the enemy.

Yeah, it has a pleasant Douglas Adams vibe to it that made me want to re-read the Dirk Gently novels again.

Is it raining in here? As someone whose family has all but abandoned, this hit harder than I would have thought.

I'll be your family... I won't abandon yo... oh look, shiny!! Be right back!!!

I read the whole thing every time I see it, it’s almost a combination of the show Lucifer and the show God’s favorite idiot lol
Harm
Having to go back taking care of previously dead flowers is an underated side effect of providing free buffet to angels & demons.
Syko73
I like that little aside too. But would you really have to "take care" of them after a divine resurrection though?

I loved that series. Come to think of it, it would be a PERFECT multi-season Netflix series - one book/incarnation per season.
jscuster
That series was nice fun fantasy until For Love Of Evil. Parry’s story hit me like a damned truck.

Well, the scene has an 80s/90s feel to it, and the grownup could be Eric Roberts, but otherwise I'm coming up empty :(

God is a vegetarian? Not old testament god.

That bit made me wonder about kosher rules. Are those just for us or is that one of the, likely many, things they split?

I imagine the God in this story referring to that as his "cringe years" or something, lol

Yeah, but Cain introduced murder into the world because of God being a picky little bitch. After a few thousand years of guilt, it put him off meat.
