You have two choices, resign or stay, where do they get you? Resign means leaving with full honours. Stay and either follow illegal orders or refuse to follow illegal orders. The first gets you life in prison for murder, the second gets you a court martial, prison and removal of all honours and rank. If you resign you can speak up and oppose the administration, try doing that from a prison cell!

yep you are right they tend to not do executions but it is still on the books for a host of crimes. I had a JAG lawyer while I was deployed tell me how he could turn a sunburn into death. Basically its willful damage of government property, that damage of property impacts unit rediness, you willfully endangered your units mission, that is treason the only punishment approved for treason during wartime is death. but the likelihood any judge would seriously entertain that is approaching zero.
