Does anyone else love the limerick challenge on NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me? I look forward to it every Saturday morning.

Bloody brilliant. I love it

Using it!

There once was a lady from Crewe // Her limerick stopped at line two.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

BEDMAS makes this not work.

I know what 9² is, but let me put it on the calculator just to be sure.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah? Well I once knew a man from Nantucket...let's just say stories about him were greatly exaggerated.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I knew him!! With the.. oh.. that thing.. anyway.. it was supposedly so big he could... uh huh

The math of the limerick is wrong. Must read all divided by 7 or all over 7. The current wording implies that only 3sqrt4 is divided by 7

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No it doesn't imply that. You simply incorrectly inferred it.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah it does. Math is very precise, which is why it generally isn't written in English. 3 plus 4 divided by 7. Whta does this mean?

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The math is correct

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not in the limerick it isn't

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Math checks out: 81=81

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

No it doesn't. It needs to read "all divided by seven" or else it implies that only 3sqrt(4) is divided by seven.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

9=9

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was going to ask this. Thx

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now, the limerick work. Does the math check out?

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

The math of the limerick is wrong. It has to read "all divided by seven." As it is now it implies 3sqrt4 is divided by 7

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Give it a go! Google has a built-in calculator if you don't want to leave your web browser.

Yes.

integral z squared dz, from one to the cube root of three, all times the cosine of three pi over nine, equals log cube root of e

The meter doesn't fit a limerick, unfortunately.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Bravo

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was confused because z doesn't rhyme with three.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Just pronounce the other words "thred" and "ed" and it still works fine.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Found the non-American.

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

"zed" lmao....

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I'm Canadian and pronounce it 'zee'.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Well, how a-boot that.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still technically North American.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Had to check it, and it's correct. 2/3 * 1/2 = 1/3.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, it doesn't work rhythmically. It has the wrong meter.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Add a "the" at the beginning and change the last line to "is nat'ral log cube root of e" and it works better.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The middle lines are off too. I think "over" changing to "o're" gets it close. Then the syllables are right but the rhythm is slightly off.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Got it! Change "all times" to "times by" and the rhythm works too!
