To get better at what you do, you first got to recognize flaws in yourself, and what it is that you do, and how you do it. And that's a tremendously difficult first step for people in general, because we live in such a challenging arena, where you keep your guard up at all times, or slip behind if you don't. To come up, mentally, and find things about yourself and work to improve, is a bit of a quasi-contradiction.

Easy to say ignore social media when you became an established actor before social media existed. It's like someone telling you to pound the pavement and go to all the workplaces to turn in resumes. It's a different world for people starting out now.

No it isn't, it's a lie you've been fed. Somewhere along the line someone whose job it is to be a social media manager said "everyone in the public eye needs a social media presence!" and everyone just went along with it. There's plenty of people doing it the old fashioned way and succeeding, drama school, acting lessons, auditions.

Also his advice wouldn't work at all for women, who have to get famous while they're still young. You can't show up as a middle-aged woman and expect to get good roles, no matter how well you act.

I don't think he means "learn" lasts until 30 years old. I think it means you should be spending your teens and early 20s learning. Even if you hit a big role and make money - you should still be learning and absorbing from others.

Need to audition, shake hands, kiss irk ass (no not like that Weinstein), try and socialize, community theater, etc. Some people think they can post some headshots and let the algorithm fairy work some magic. In acting, yea, you do kind of have to pound the pavement some, even if you have a killer agent.

Social media is selling your image to the public. Casting agents care very little about that. They can see who spent 16+ hrs on self-promotion vs acting.

I think the message he was making was get out of echo Chambers telling you You're great and challenge yourself. Nothing destroys Talent more than praise. As an artist myself, there's nothing I hate more than someone telling me I'm awesome, because I know I'm not. It's the Dunning Kruger effect. I know how much I don't know, and I know so many people can do it a million times better than me.

No I meant they can't "learn to act on stage" ie: They can't learn how to be a doctor until they're trained to... become a doctor. And even then they still have to do on the job training as you pointed out.

Ah, gotcha. I think in the same way many people study theater and act in some plays and work as understudies while they are in school, doctors act as interns and then residents in hospitals as well, then they STILL need to learn after they graduate medical school.

I've worked with so many prima donna teenage/20-something software engineers who KNEW they were the greatest thing since sliced bread because they would whip up a fancy app in no time flat. Then their shit doesn't scale, is unmaintainable, can't connect to legacy systems or existing data sources, can't be extended to mobile platforms, etc etc etc. It's a world where learning from one's predecessors while simultaneously breaking their mold and mindset should be much more appreciated than it is.

most public facing jobs require networking and social media in this era. his "turn off the social media" advice isn't built for today's normal. Equivalent of my boomer dad telling me "showing up and handing out resumes" is how he did it in 1972.
