Watching this I'm born between thinking of the Stufio Ghibli soot sprites, and that one Spongebob comic.

So...Starfish are the clans. Good to know, I wouldn't want them to issue a Batchal on me.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Are they really moving that fast and SWIMMING? Or is this time-lapse photo?

And then you realize the footage is sped up 😂

Actually it is.

Seastars

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Formally, they just call them an aggregation or cluster. How boring. A group of starfish can also called a constellation, which I also like.

Ocean can openers.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why do they sometimes disappear?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The tank has a large, square box in the middle which the stars climb around and out of sight.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope, just left of center. I'm guessing this is a time lapse and they're falling between snaps but I can't catch it just right

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, you're right, poorly worded of me.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it's because the footage is sped up, and sometimes they fall off the inside of the tank between one frame and the next.

Anyone else reminded of those water arcade games that your grandparents would have where you'd push a button to blow tiny plastic things around with air bubbles?

1 month ago | Likes 157 Dislikes 3

Uh the water tasted awful

1 month ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

You were supposed to snort it.

1 month ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That I had as a child?! Yes! Thanks for making me feel old. lol

Grandparents? Fuck off 😅

1 month ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Isn't that too many starfish for that amount of space?

1 month ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

It looks like a store display tank. Store systems (good ones anyway, plenty of bad ones out there!) are usually flow-through systems where the display tank is much smaller portion of the total water volume than a home tank would be.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Absolutely. You also need an INCREDIBLY well established tank, talking like 2+ years old, before you can even think of putting a star in. If they don't have enough to eat they will starve and they eat a lot so the ecosystem needs to support that appetite.

So this is bs?

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nah just blatant cruelty? Or maybe a transfer tank...

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Starfish are terrifying.... biologically.

Sounds like you need some harlequin shrimp.

Mindless clumps of carnivorous flesh walking around on thousands of tiny feet.

1 month ago | Likes 129 Dislikes 0

Yet they behave like animals with a central nervous system ... just extra slow. The implications are pretty creepy.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I mean, it’s not like your brain has a single “master neuron” that does all the experiencing; it’s extremely *logical* to understand your own mind as far more *diffuse* than the narratively-structured experience you construct from your senses. Your optical processing can and DOES lie to you on the regular by preprocessing out your blind spot, and your memories are rewritten every single time you access them.

I too find it existentially horrifying, but it’s also fascinating.

As the fishermen found when they tried to get rid of them by hauling them up, cutting them in half and throwing them back.

1 month ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

1 month ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That's how you get twice as many starfish.

1 month ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Starfish are considered pests by fishermen because they're poisonous, invasive, and they eat more desirable fish. So back in the 60s, they'd try to get rid of them using the above method.

It didn't work.

Starfish can regenerate from incredible amounts of damage, and have no centralized nervous system. Some species can even regenerate from catastrophic injuries such as loss of central disc, which contains their mouth and stomach.

Holy fuck that’s METAL 🤘!

Why can't WE do that??
