Yep been, there done that, and found that a wedge shaped pillow from Amazon was a big help. Not the most comfortable, but really helps keep you on your back through the night. Also cuts down the snoring, but I don't know. I stayed awake all night once and didn't hear myself snoring at all. I really have no idea what she's talking about.
Everybody has different reasons for back sleeping to be uncomfortable but I found that a weighted pad, I think it was just a few pounds, over my chest and stomach has made falling asleep on my back much easier.
I dunno how you sleep in your side, but I feel that sleeping on your back. After I was hit by a car riding a bicycle I had to learn to sleep on my back. Legs, left arm, left shoulder, head messed up, had bruse's showing up for years on my legs. Mostly on my right one. Still have odd marks on my leg from the fin on the hood.

Not surprised there's an injury after sleeping in your side. Sounds painful, too.

I always start on my side, I wake up on my back

Pillows. Lots of pillows help at least get you into a position that has at least a minor improvement

Ugh hate that.. shoulder injury has my arm going to sleep unless I position it just right on that side. Have to change position now.
