I think you might want to reread the books. The show portrayal is spot on compared to the book.
I actually think that the humiliation of Tyrion was even worse in the book.
Also worth noting that while he is 19 years old in the show (apparently), he is only a 12 year old in the books, when he dies.

I don't recall him being a sadist in the book. The whores scene, for instance, I don't recall that happening. I could be wrong.
