Also, because he is carrying on with his daily life regardless of this and all the other court matters, he is projecting a sense of innocence to his cult base. As you say, he always states he is the victim, the victim of this evil witch hunt against him because he is leading the polls. He makes it political rather than criminal. They believe him, of course.
