It's also worth mentioning that there are many materials that can't be mined, farmed, or harvested in the US. Either we don't have it or we don't have enough of it. Platinum group metals, tin, tropical fruits, cacao, coffee. Our oil is also too light to make diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil. We have to import oil for those purposes.
And simpler than that, we simply don't have enough people to do every step of every job. America is at the top of the economic food chain, creating high expertise products and consuming low expertise products made by other countries.
We probably do have enough people. What we don't have is enough people who can work for such low wages (though I'm sure the MAGA wrecking crew are working to change that). This is what creates the price on the shelf that people are currently acquainted with. So either we turn the US into a sweatshop country of its own, or we spend ludicrous money on the basic things we take for granted. Or we could continue buying the same stuff as before, except now with a regressive ass 10% tax slapped on top.
Airfare will skyrocket (not in a good way), people will struggle to heat their homes in the winter, out-of-season foods will become more expensive, and basic ass logistics like trucking and shipping will become more expensive as well. And literally none of those things will provide us even an indirect benefit to us because there's no alternative.
I hope they tariff the SH*T out of the economy and it crashes in flames and every union scumbag that voted for Trump has to fight for a position at Walmart. May Satan take whatever rump souls they have left.
