P.S. - there would never have been any ridiculous tariff wars or war with Iran if Kamala Harris was president.

Ok.. time to switch to chicken? Or be a vegetarian?

In the early 10s I'd see people argue in comparisons of different minimum wages that you have to factor the comparatively low price of stuff in the US as well as exchange rates.
Currently In Australia - generally on the upper end for minimum wage and that kind of topic - standard minced beef is worth about 12 minutes a pound by my best conversion.
TomWest61
The minimum wage reflects a contempt for humanity.

I stopped buying beef, (except the occasional Costco hot dog) because of its carbon footprint

It's fine, since we're abolishing food inspections the meat packets can go back to adding horsemeat or sawdust or dirt or whatever the fuck they used to do. That'll bring down prices.

Interesting! So am hour of work could buy you enough for a day? If rent weren't so expensive, we'd all be consuming much more!

We need a not-neoliberal party with teeth. Greens suddenly became a viable party in the UK, for example. BadEmpenada has it: the system has convinced you voting is your only option but we need from the ground up reform. Athenian democracy didn't work like this and in fact held that 'democracy = voting' leads to oligarchy. Their answer was a lottery. Modern answers don't have to be that, but they can no longer be 'working within a rigged game.'
veronicablood
the UK? Is that the Brexit place?
ringtailrho
Indeed, now note how in the growing wildfire of that fallout, a third party is taking a real chunk of Parliament because Labor (was socialist, is now neoliberal) turned out like our Democrats - surveillance, nothing socialist, paving roads for fascists, ignoring genocides (that is, continuing to supply genocidal governments). So they squandered that change and things are moving towards Greens.

A bushel of corn, 50 ears, is $4.20 this week. A cow eats a bushel in approximately 4 days, double that with grass feed available.
Put one in your back yard and never mow the lawn.
As for cost, often male dairy cows are put down (veal exists only for the milk industry), but they marble up almost like black angus. So you can get baby boy cows cheap/free...
But you'll likely have to bottle feed him and after a few months of that you probably won't be able to eat him.
Welcome new vegetarian!
veronicablood
nice to own a back yard isn't it. (new study says 70% of people under 30 in the US still living in mom's basement). Wish i had the kind of money to be this oblivious to reallity.

Trump did say if we voted for Kamala our grocery bills would skyrocket, and wouldn't you know it, I voted for Kamala and my grocery bills skyrocketed.
veronicablood
said we start a war in Iran, too.

Well it's called "bread and circus" as the distraction, not "hamburgers and steaks and circus". The goal is to keep the people placated with the cheapest shit. But then marketing slaps the word "gourmet" on cheap staple goods and jacks the price once they know there's no substitute. When we start seeing "gourmet" dry rice and beans we're truly fucked.
eadanke
The price of beef went up more due to Trump gutting Biden's inflation reduction act and its funding to keep Canadian cattle range open.
jcspdbisme
You think we got cheaper beef from Canada then we could produce in our country you surely showing what kind of brain you have
eadanke
Since I'm talking about cattle range here, I had hoped most people would understand I'm talking about the exchange of feeder and fed cattle rather than the cost of importing processed beef from Canada.
swedeonamoose
Thatsa pricey meatball.

The worst of Covid has been over for 4 years at this point. Are you saying their herds wouldn't have recovered in that time?
alloutofmondays
This is verifiably untrue.
Drought is the main driver of beef prices right now. Alongside feed price increases and several other factors.
Covid was long enough ago that herds would have recovered by now, but ranchers are still reducing their head counts due to drought and reduced grazing land alongside much higher operating costs.
veronicablood
this is verifiably untrue.
All beef at the grocery store came in a truck, and the price of deisel fuel is the culprit
alloutofmondays
I was referring to the fact that ranchers are continuing to reduce herd sizes in the face of other issues, so reduced herd sizes from the pandemic would be a non factor considering ranchers are currently reducing herd sizes.
If you’re going to be snarky, at least be smart about it. Especially when replying to a verifiably correct answer. Makes you seem dumb.

obviously you do, retard
TheManWhoStaresAtTurtles
Two things can contribute to the same problem. Looking it up, I'm seeing articles reflecting on the price trend for beef (re: the drought situation) going back for years, and most of the central United States is in long-term drought.
Either way, you can blame conservative nonsense for a lot of this.
Totallycasual
I never really thought about prices of things in relation to min wage, i think in Australia you can get around 2 pounds for one hour of min wage.
sadurdaynight
I started thinking about it as a teen when i got my first job working fast food. I was getting like $4/hr, and a burger cost about $4. So if i wanted to eat 3 meals it would cost me 3 hrs of my 8 hr shift. If i wanted more money i could either eat cheaper or work more hours. The reality of paycheck to paycheck work hit home pretty fast. But stupid me kept working shit low wage jobs for a long time until i got out.
Totallycasual
Yeah, over the years i have heard people compare min wage to bigmac burgers from McDonalds, i guess i had just never heard of the ground beef one, makes a lot more sense though because not everyone eats takout.
AgentTasmania
A hair over two *kilograms* per hour, so about four and a half pounds.
Sources: purchased beef mince in Australia today and googled current minimum wage.
ArchmageMelek
Mince beef at my local Aldi here in the UK is £6.18 per kg, our minimum wage is £12.71. So also roughly four and a half pounds per hour worked. The US is fucking crazy...
Totallycasual
Depends on the type of mince though too, typically it's sold in 500 gram packages and the top shelf stuff can be as much as double the budget stuff.
veronicablood

How on earth do you equate never having considered the relationship between min wage and ground beef with "private island money"?

how can you imagine that never having to consider the cost of food means you live in Villain Territory? and really, what's it to you?

Agree completely. I'm sorry democrats, but you need to read the room. This country is too sexist and too racist to ever elect her. Run a white guy under 60.
"But that's just as racist!"
No, that's the reality of the american electorate.
Do you want to virtue signal another minority candidate, lose, and deal with 4 more years of republican rule? Or do you want to WIN and maybe work on getting the country to a place where a minority CAN get elected again?
FetteredJuvenescence
Honestly, the dems need to read the room in their own party and realize they've basically completely lost the progressive vote by continually shifting more right in an attempt to sway more of the wafflers. They've tried to hard to convert the fence-sitters that they've lost support they thought they had a lock on.
alex5775
I don't think being black and a woman made her unelectable, but it sure worked against her. Especially in the centrist demographic the Democrats continuously capitulate to. Admittedly, the left is an unreliable demographic for voting, but I think the energy against Trump makes them a more viable target as long as you don't signify a right-ward swing, which Harris did.
Miller16of16
She lost because she promised Biden 2.0 with the endorsement of Dick Cheney and a 180⁰ from her earlier somewhat progressive positions. Trump got fewer votes than in '20 and Harris got fewer votes than Biden '20. DNC needs to stop with the bullcrap before they run a Newsom et al and lose again. As much as they despise the Left/progressive electorate, they can't win without em.
Miller16of16
Harris actually took the lead over Trump...until she opened her mouth.

What did she say that was the killer?

Do you not comprehend that you are telling your allies to “fuck off”? It’s widely acknowledged what happened to the democratic primary & general elections in 2024 were a colossal failure! If you can’t recognize abject failure, how are you ever going to learn from those mistakes and progress forward? Are you the type of person unable to apologize for anything?
